The Orville Season 3 Set Videos Give BTS Look At Space Battle Filming

The Orville releases some behind-the-scenes videos showcasing some of the camerawork and stuntwork used in an action sequence from the upcoming third season of the science fiction comedy. The Orville season 3 will premiere on June 2, 2022, on Hulu, having aired its first two seasons on Fox. Series creator and star Seth MacFarlane will also direct some of the new episodes.

The Orville follows the titular space ship, a midlevel exploration vessel used for discovering new planets and making contact with alien races, commanded by MacFarlane’s Captain Ed Mercer. The series is an homage and parody of the Star Trek franchise using a similar premise and structure for its narrative. The Orville‘s cast ensemble is rounded out by Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes, and Peter Macon.

The videos come from The Orville producer Tom Costantino, who shared then on his Instagram. The first is a video showing a camera operator on a camera-mounted vehicle as he films a cast member running through the ship as explosions go off around him. The video also includes a view of what the camera is seeing, as it keeps pace with the actor and gives a better view of the practical effects. Costantino also shared a second video that shows another moment from the same scene, as a stunt person is thrown by an explosion into a wall, again with multiple views conveying the information. The Orville season 3 has teased larger scale battles, likely due to the increased budget and lower network oversight from Hulu. Filming of the third season wrapped in August 2021, but the heavy effects the show utilizes have led to a lengthy post-production process. Despite mixed reviews from critics, The Orville has received positive notices from audiences, with a fan base that will hopefully make the transfer to the show’s new home on Hulu.

With Star Trek being of one science fiction’s most beloved and long-running franchises, it’s refreshing to see a series that takes the unfiltered joy of exploring the unknown and combining it with character-based irreverence and sharp observations. The Orville‘s mix of humor and genuine passion for its genre allows it a wider palette in storytelling, without resigning itself to the over-seriousness or cynicism that would come from leaning on one genre too much. With the new season coming in a few months, fans of The Orville will see a return that is long overdue, which will only make it all the more enjoyable.
