The Original Flash’s Hardcore Fight with Mecha-Sharks Is Way Cooler than Barry & Wally’s Recent Feats

Warning: contains spoilers for Jay Garrick: The Flash #6!

Jay Garrick, the Flash, recently had a hardcore throwdown with a group of mecha-sharks, putting him in a league way above Barry Allen and Wally West. Since his epic return to the DC Universe three years ago, Jay Garrick has reasserted himself as the elder statesman of the Flash family. Yet in Jay Garrick: The Flash #6, Jay proves himself to be one of its best fighters as well.

Jay Garrick: The Flash #6 is written by Jeremy Adams and drawn by Diego Olortegui. Jay is racing to a small island in the Atlantic. This island is Doctor Elemental’s secret lair. Doctor Elemental, Jay Garrick’s former mentor, is holding Jay’s daughter Judy hostage, planning to use her power to help further his plans of conquest. As Jay approaches the island, he is accosted by a group of mechanical sharks. The action then cuts back to Elemental’s control room.

Jay Garrick’s Comeback Has Been A Joy For Fans

Mechanical sharks are but the latest in a line of curveballs life has thrown at Jay Garrick recently. After spending the biggest part of the 2010s on the sidelines, Garrick returned during Infinite Frontier. Afterward, DC, during their New Golden Age initiative, revealed that Garrick had a long-lost daughter, named Judy. Judy had been extracted from the timeline, causing Jay and Joan to forget about her. Reunited with Judy, the Garrick family is whole again.

Jay Garrick, along with Alan Scott Green Lantern, and Ted Grant (Wildcat), is one of DC’s oldest surviving heroes. This has brought him “elder statesmen” status in the DC Universe. Younger generations seek Jay Garrick out for advice and wisdom. In addition, Jay is viewed as the patriarch of the Flash Family. His adventures inspired Barry Allen, Wally West and other speedsters. After being unceremoniously swept under the rug during the New 52 era, Jay Garrick has had an amazing comeback arc, one that has brought him to a fight with giant mechanical sharks.

During this fight, Jay Garrick proves he is the Flash Family’s premier fighter as well. While most of Flash’s fight with Doctor Elemental’s mechanical sharks was off panel, what fans do get to see is hardcore. Jay used his super speed to completely annihilate the sharks, tearing them to bits. Even though the sharks were robotic, Jay nevertheless showed no mercy. While Barry Allen and Wally West have had some extraordinary fight scenes as the Flash, Jay Garrick proved he is better than both of them by fighting mecha sharks.
