The Office’s Opening Credits Remade With Minions Is Oddly Perfect

The Office‘s opening credits are remade with the Minions in a new video, and the result is oddly perfect. NBC and Universal launched the American remake of the hit British comedy, The Office, in 2005. The workplace mockumentary starred Steve Carell as Michael Scott, John Krasinski as Jim Halpert, Jenna Fischer as Pam Beasley, Rainn Wilson as Dwight Schrute, alongside a talented ensemble cast. The Office became one of the biggest shows in America throughout its nine-season run, and received over 40 Emmy nominations.

It has been nine years since The Office ended, but the series is still incredibly popular. It was one of the biggest draws for Netflix during the time it streamed on the platform, and was positioned as a huge motivator for users to subscribe to Peacock once the comedy moved to Universal’s streaming service at the start of 2021. Peacock and Universal have yet to formalize plans for a The Office reboot or revival, although discussions of these potential projects continue. Meanwhile, the Minions have become instantly recognizable characters in pop culture since their debut in Despicable Me, as Gru’s (also played by Carrell) hilarious, jibberish-speaking yellow henchmen.

Now, Universal is in the final stretch of the marketing campaign for the Minions’ spinoff movie sequel, Minions: The Rise of Gru. Since Carell played both Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch boss Michael Scott and the Minions’ leader Gru, the official The Office Twitter account has now shared a video that combines his two roles together, as the Minions star in a remake of The Office opening credits. Strangely, the mashup clip works seamlessly.

The Minions and The Office crossover perfectly recreates the opening credits, but with its own fun twist. Gru being the stand-in for Michael Scott makes the most sense, since Carell plays them both. It is also quite funny to see the Minion’s Kevin play Dwight Schrute, while Stuart nails Jim Halpert’s floppy hairstyle in the early seasons of The Office. It also includes Minion recreations of some iconic moments from the show, such as Otto suffering Kevin’s chili spill. There are also plenty of The Office Easter eggs littered throughout the video.

Beyond Carell’s involvement in both Universal properties, it might seem like The Office and Minions do not have much in common. This video shows just how surprisingly well the Minions would work in the Dunder Mifflin Scranton branch, including a CGI/live-action hybrid setting. Now that Universal has shown the potential of this idea, it will be fascinating to see if the fan response to the crossover is strong enough for the studio to make something more out of it. Even if not, this The Office opening credits remake with the Minions is a surprisingly effective piece of marketing.
