The Nun 2 Director Reveals Sneaky Reason Behind The Warrens’ Mid-Credits Scene: “I Thought I Fooled Everyone”

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the mid-credits scene of The Nun 2.

The origin of the mid-credits scene from The Nun 2 has been explained by director Michael Chaves. The new movie is the eighth title in The Conjuring Universe, and the second directed by Chaves after The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, which was the third entry in the main branch of the franchise. The mid-credits scene of the movie sees the main Conjuring characters Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) receiving a call from Father Gordon, the character who facilitates many of their paranormal investigations.

Collider recently sat down for an interview with Michael Chaves ahead of the Nun 2 release on home media. When asked about the fact that the mid-credits scene sees the Warrens in the same costumes they wore in The Conjuring 3, Chaves admitted that he re-used footage from his previous movie. He revealed that “I thought I was so smart, and I thought I fooled everyone.” Read his full quote below:

What’s so funny is up until this junket, I thought I had fooled everyone. It was footage from Conjuring 3, and I had cut it out. I think we had shown it to one test audience, and beyond that, no one had seen it…But I thought I was so smart, and I thought I fooled everyone. [Laughs] It’s like, “No one’s gonna know what this is from. This is gonna be great.”

Does The Nun 2 Connect to The Conjuring 4 At All?

As part of The Conjuring Universe, the Nun subfranchise features many connections to the rest of the movies. This includes the presence of the demon Valak, which first appears in its preferred guise as a demonic nun in The Conjuring 2. The recurring character Maurice (Jonas Bloquet) also appeared – at an older age – in a sequence in the original The Conjuring which explores his grim fate.

However, it is now clear that the phone call shown in the mid-credits scene of The Nun 2 may not connect directly to the upcoming sequel The Conjuring: Last Rites. However, the movie may have made more than just a sly nod to Chaves’ previous outing in The Conjuring Universe. It also features a sequence where the character Sophie (Katelyn Rose Downey) has a vision of Valak in a hallway that is clearly in the Warrens’ home, even though the events of the movie take place decades before the couple ever encountered the demon, at least to their knowledge.

It is unclear if that The Nun 2 sequence has any connection to the next movie either. However, Last Rites is intended to act as a finale of sorts to the current slate of Conjuring Universe movies, which also includes the Annabelle trilogy. As such, The Conjuring 4 may tie in plot threads from all the other movies, including the Nun sequel, making that hallway moment much more important than it originally seemed.
