One of the world’s most unique outlaws is coming back to the screen in an exclusive The Night They Came Home trailer. The upcoming Western thriller explores the tale of the Rufus Buck Gang and their conflicts with both the US Marshalls, including Heck Thomas, as well as Native American police, who are looking to get justice for the outlaws’ attacks on the local Creek in the Arkansas-Oklahoma region formerly known as Indian Territory. Chris Townsend leads the ensemble The Night They Came Home cast as Rufus alongside Tim Abell as Heck, Brian Austin Green, Danny Trejo and Robert Carradine.

Ahead of the movie’s theatrical and digital premiere on January 12, Screen Rant can exclusively premiere The Night They Came Home trailer. The video, as seen at the top of this article, introduces viewers to the bloody reign of terror Rufus Buck and his gang of outlaws brought to the Old West, including some of the unfortunate people to become his victims. The trailer also shows Trejo’s unnamed grave digger whose involvement in the story appears to be relaying the tale of Rufus to a curious couple at a saloon.

The Night They Came Continues A Recent Western Trend

Generally considered one of the longest-running genres in film, Westerns have seen everything from the explosive showdowns of Clint Eastwood’s Dollars trilogy to the hilarity of Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles and even the dramatic video game sphere of Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption titles. With The Night They Came Home, however, not only does the movie continue the genre’s resurgence, but it also continues a recent trend of exploring true stories and figures from the Old West era.

The past few years, in particular, have seen various filmmakers bring their unique visions to highlight both the most popular outlaws and lawmen from the era. Over a decade after the show ended, David Milch and HBO brought back Deadwood for the movie sequel, which garnered rave reviews as it expanded on US Marshal Seth Bullock and brothel owner Al Swearengen. Multiple versions of Billy the Kid’s story have been adapted for the screen in recent years as well, including the Ethan Hawke and Dane DeHaan-led The Kid and the self-named Tom Blyth show on MGM+, which recently premiered the first part of its second season.

Interestingly, The Night They Came Home also marks the third adaptation of Rufus Buck’s story within the past five years. Following a supporting role in the Bass Reeves-fronted Hell on the Border, Netflix explored the outlaw and his gang with The Harder They Fall, an ensemble thriller starring Idris Elba as the menacing Buck, which garnered widespread acclaim from critics and audiences alike. With Townsend having big shoes to fill after the Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominee, it will be interesting to see how he approaches his role in comparison to others before him.
