The New Superman & His Marvel Copycat Both Start Filming This Week

The New Superman & His Marvel Copycat Both Start Filming This Week

2024 may be a quiet year for the DCU and MCU, but two of the studios’ most powerful superheroes, namely Superman and his Marvel counterpart, will reportedly begin filming for their respective movies this week. Now that the DCEU has ended, the pressure is on for James Gunn’s DCU to reinvent DC’s cinematic presence with Superman fittingly positioned at the forefront of the endeavor, much like Cavill’s Superman was for the DCEU. Hope remains that this second attempt will yield more positive results as the new universe enters its earliest stages of production.

The pressure is no less severe for Marvel following a tumultuous year that book ended with a record-breaking critical failure and a record-breaking box office failure in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels, respectively. Instead of completely reinventing itself like DC has, the MCU timeline is forging ahead with its planned schedule with renewed impetus as it resolves to reduce a previously overwhelming output. The results will hopefully speak for themselves as filming begins for two very important movies in both studios’ respective franchises.

Superman: Legacy will kick off the DCU with the fresh-faced David Corenswet replacing Henry Cavill to portray a younger Clark Kent. He will be joined by several big names, including Nicholas Hoult and Nathan Filion, to tell a unique Superman story in which super-powered people are a well-established part of the mythos right off the bat. Details surrounding Superman: Legacy have begun ramping up as production has gotten underway for the ambitious reboot and will no doubt continue to do so now that filming begins this week.

Filming was confirmed to be commencing this week by Warner Bros. Discovery boss David Zaslav during the company’s Q4 2024 Earnings Call. This follows several script readings during which Hawkgirl actor, Isabela Merced, posted a picture to Instagram that has spawned plenty of theories about the Superman: Legacy plot based on what the chosen Superman logo implies. Excitingly, the commencement of filming may help propagate, negate, or support these theories as first looks at images like Superman’s costume are sure to follow. Meanwhile, the same could be in store for Marvel’s Thunderbolts.

While Superman makes his mark on the DCU with Superman: Legacy, the MCU’s Sentry will reportedly be poised to do the same in Thunderbolts. Marvel’s next team-up movie will feature a charismatic cast of antiheroes including Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, who recently confirmed that filming for Thunderbolts is already underway in a red-carpet interview with Entertainment Tonight (via @tbolts_news). Sentry, a character most recently reported to be played by Top Gun: Maverick‘s Lewis Pullman, is also set to join the lineup, introducing some insurmountable stakes for the comparatively under-powered titular team in Thunderbolts.

The parallels between Sentry and Superman are stark, with both carrying a litany of customary superpowers including flight, invulnerability, and superhuman strength and speed. The main thing is that both are particularly formidable and capable of going toe-to-toe with the MCU and DCU‘s most powerful beings, provided neither studio introduces significant debuffs. Sentry, however, brings a significant layer of added danger in his alter-ego, Void. This destructive personality will likely form the basis for his Thunderbolts inclusion, as the team is tasked with bringing him to heel or bringing him down.
