The Sentry is dead, but ordinary people all over the world are suddenly manifesting his powers and experiencing snippets of Bob Reynolds’ memories. But not everyone can be trusted with such responsibility, sparking a violent conflict to control the Sentry’s legacy. Will one of them survive long enough to emerge as the new Sentry? Or will their newfound power destroy them?

Marvel has promised that only one character will survive as the new Sentry, but whether they’ll use their power for good or evil has yet to be decided. Enjoy cover art for the issue from Ben Harvey, Salvador Larocca, Ema Lupacchino, Peach Momoko and Skottie Young, below.

Bob Reynolds was burglarizing a secluded lab when he came across a new version of the Super-Soldier serum, downing it without a second thought. The formula awakened immense power in Bob, shattering his psyche in the process. By day, Bob Reynolds was the Sentry – a major force for good in the Marvel Universe, beloved by everyone from Reed Richards to the Hulk. However, for every act of heroism the Sentry accomplished, Bob would transform into the villainous Void, causing death and destruction. Eventually, the Sentry made the decision to wipe the entire planet’s memory of him, safeguarding them from the Void.

For years, his decision stuck, but unfortunately the world’s most powerful hero was a secret too big to keep, and Bob was forced back into the hero life, first as a member of the Avengers, then as Norman Osborn’s manipulated thrall in the Dark Avengers. The Sentry has struggled with his powers ever since, but will now pass them on, allowing someone else to assume the burden of being Marvel’s mightiest man. However, there are those who will use the Sentry’s powers for good, and those with destruction on their mind. Writer Jason Loo says:

This entire series is a mystery where we follow Jessica Jones and Misty Knight as they figure out these catastrophic accidents caused by random strangers with the Sentry’s powers. You’re going to witness a bunch of origin stories, like Mallory Gibbs, a writer for Front Line news who lives with cerebral palsy. Farhad Anand is a mutant keeping a low profile as a DoorDish bicycle courier. And Ryan Topper, a teenage fanboy who gets to live his dream of becoming a super hero. And there are a few more further into the story. But the real question is….how are they all connected to Robert Reynolds?

The New Sentry Is Inheriting a Dark Legacy

Where There’s the Sentry, There’s Also the Void

THE SENTRY AND THE VOID

Dark Avengers speculated that while the Super-Soldier serum may have given Bob his powers, it was likely only because it allowed him to tap into an existing power source – one that was implied to have Biblical origins. The Sentry fought the Hulk to a standstill and mandhandled a Celestial, but fell to Knull during the King in Black event, who was able to manipulate the Void to take Bob out of the fight. Having gone on to a peaceful rest, Bob Reynolds’ suffering is over, but will his legacy be one of continued heroism, or powerful evil?

While Farhad Anand and Mallory Gibbs look heroic in their new Sentry costumes, Ryan Topper appears significantly more malevolent, especially in Skottie Young’s variant cover. It seems that as Jessica Jones and Misty Knight investigate the new hosts of the Sentry‘s power, they’ll have the front-two seat for the birth of a new god-tier hero… or world-ending villain.
