The Most Iconic Part of Gojo’s Costume in Jujutsu Kaisen Has an Origin Fans Would Never Guess

Jujutsu Kaisen‘s most famous and beloved hero is Gojo Satoru, the strongest sorcerer in the modern age. He has become a recognizable symbol both within the anime community and the wider world of pop culture. Numerous fans possess incredible love for him, and Akutami has just revealed a new and interesting fact about the hero.

One of the most striking and standout details about Gojo’s physical appearance is the covering he wears over his eyes. In the JJK 0 film released December 24, 2021, he wore white bandages to shield his eyes, matching perfectly with his bright white hair.

However, in an interview, translated by X user @sohkatsu_, Jujutsu Kaisen’s creator Gege Akutami explained his decision to forego the white bandages and give Gojo the signature black blindfold he is well-recognized for in the series. His reason for making this change is somewhat surprising and humorous, offering new insight into the fan-favorite character.

Gojo Originally Wore White Bandages Instead Of His Signature Blindfold

Akutami’s reason for changing from bandages to a blindfold is quite simple: the blindfold was much easier to draw. Gojo is a character who is very prominent in the manga and featured in many scenes, so Akutami knew he would have to draw the character quite frequently. Drawing a set of bandages was “too tedious,” the interview described, leading the creator to choose a more simplistic blindfold for the character instead. The change worked out since fans really appreciate Satoru’s current appearance, blindfold and all. The dark-colored blindfold also stands out and provides a nice contrast with Gojo’s design, which is heavy on white and blue.

The reason Satoru must always wear his blindfold when not utilizing his technique is because he possesses a power called Six Eyes. When he is not actively using the power, Gojo protects his vision using an eye covering, because Six Eyes saps a lot of energy and leaves him exhausted. Since he had to wear his eye covering almost all the time, Akutami wanted to make it easy to draw. The power runs in the Gojo clan and is incredibly rare and useful against enemies because it enables him to view the Cursed Energy of whoever he is fighting.

Akutami Chose a Blindfold Because It Is Simpler To Draw

It is quite hilarious that Akutami chose to give Gojo his trademark blindfold simply to save drawing time. This is similar to when Dragon Ball Z creator, Akira Toriyama, changed Goku’s Super Saiyan design to make it easier to color in, giving him a lighter shade of hair. It makes sense that mangaka would make design choices that are aesthetically pleasing but also relatively simple to draw, since they must draw these iconic characters over and over week after week. Jujutsu Kaisen‘s Gojo Satoru possesses one of the most incredible and recognizable designs in anime, so Gege Akutami’s choice certainly worked out for the best.
