“The Mistakes of the Justice League”: The Titans Are Officially an Evolution of the Justice League (Not Their Sidekicks)

Spoilers for Titans: Beast World #1

Despite many of the Titans originating as sidekicks to Justice League members, the team and its heroes have grown far beyond that, with DC and its creators – including Titans writer Ton Taylor – making a conscious effort to depict the team as an evolution of the Justice League, learning from their predecessors’ mistakes and growing to face the next generation of DC Universe threats.

In an interview with ComicBook.com, Taylor – who wrote Titans: Beast World #1, which features art by Ivan Reis, Danny Miki, Brad Anderson, and Wes Abbot – discussed what makes the Titans an improvement on the Justice League, situating them as the future greatest DC superteam.

Taylor described the emphasis on featuring the former sidekicks as on the same level as the Justice League, and perhaps even ascending to greater heights, as “a big part of these Titans.” Given their central role in the company’s latest crossover, it is evident the Titans are essential to the future of DC Comics.

“We wanted them to feel like the adults in the room,” Taylor said of the current iteration of the Titans, as featured in his ongoing series following the team, as well as the recently launched Beast World crossover event, which promises to have lasting repercussions for the DC Universe as a whole. The writer noted the intention behind his current Titans run was tied to their relationship with the Justice League: “We wanted them to have learned from the past mistakes of the Justice League and just say, ‘No, we can talk about this instead of weird amounts of subterfuge and going behind your back.”

As the top heroes of the DC Universe coming together to fight threats they can’t face alone, the Justice League can be a “too many cooks in the kitchen” situation. While they may always prevail in the end, their contrasting and conflicting big personalities can often lead to tension, delaying pivotal action. The Titans not only operate together, they live together, operating more as a family than a team. Their ability to circumvent the inherent drawbacks of a superteam has “been a theme in Titans so far,” according to writer Tom Taylor.

Love Could Tear The Titans Apart

“You see more of that in Titan’s Beast World, for sure,” Taylor said of the team’s distinctions from the Justice League. Their team unity has been the virtue that helped elevate the Titans to the Justice League’s level. Now, however, with the tragic death of long-time member Beast Boy in Titans: Beast World #1, and subsequent issues of the crossover set to transform the team into various animal forms, it is possible the team’s love for one another could be their undoing. The story of how the Titans and the heroes of Justice League come together – or find themselves torn apart – as this latest crisis unfolds is set to enthrall readers in the coming months.

Titans: Beast World #1 is available now from DC Comics.
