The MCU’s Next Rumored Magic User Would Make Scarlet Witch’s Death Even Worse

The MCU’s Next Rumored Magic User Would Make Scarlet Witch’s Death Even Worse

One character rumored to be returning to the MCU in Agatha: Darkhold Diaries would make the Scarlet Witch’s death in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness worse. Although many speculated that the Scarlet Witch, AKA Wanda Maximoff, survived the moment she dropped Mount Wungadore down upon herself to destroy the Darkhold, the MCU seemingly confirmed Wanda’s death in Marvel Studios’ The Marvel Cinematic Universe: An Official Timeline. Now, the MCU might be rubbing salt in the wound in Agatha: Darkhold Diaries, Agatha Harkness’ WandaVision spin-off show.

Agatha: Darkhold Diaries has had several updates since it was announced in 2021, most notably changing titles from House of Harkness to Coven of Chaos before being confirmed to be titled Darkhold Diaries. This suggests a connection to Wanda’s death, as she died to destroy the Darkhold in every universe, but the show could introduce an even stronger link. Joe Locke is rumored to play Wanda’s resurrected son, Wiccan. In the comics, Wiccan was the Scarlet Witch’s son, Billy, reborn to different parents. If the rumors are true, this would be a terrible update to the Scarlet Witch’s fate.

WandaVision Ending Explained: Biggest Reveals & MCU Future Setup

The long-awaited WandaVision finale delivers huge reveals and plenty of future MCU setup. Here’s everything that happens in the dramatic ending.

MCU Phase 5 Introducing Scarlet Witch’s Resurrected Son Is A Cruel Twist

In Multiverse of Madness, Wanda goes on a desperate search for a way to reunite with her children, forgetting everything she learned in WandaVision and compromising her morals. The constant refrain, “I’m not a monster, I’m a mother” is enough for the character to justify murdering countless people to access other universes where she could be with her boys. Despite everything she does – which ultimately means that she has become a monster – the movie ends not only with her not reuniting with her sons, but also with her dying alone.

After a thorough character assassination in Multiverse of Madness and how much Wanda suffered, it would be brutal for the MCU to now find a way to bring one or both sons back. Wanda died knowing she could never see her children again and recognizing that she had to destroy the Darkhold and herself, as both were threats to the multiverse. To know that there was a way for her sons to come back, perhaps one that didn’t require her to become a villain yet again, but that she never lived to see it, would be too painful a twist.

How Agatha: Darkhold Diaries Can Justify Introducing Billy Kaplan

Scarlet Witch holds her hands up as Mount Wundagore collapses in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Joe Locke has only been confirmed to be cast; Marvel hasn’t announced who Locke will be playing. If he is portraying Billy Kaplan, the MCU has a path forward to make the connection to Wanda’s death heartwarming rather than cruel. One theory is that Darkhold Diaries may see Agatha resurrect the Scarlet Witch. This would make sense, given that Agatha was obsessed with gaining Wanda’s powers in WandaVision.

If that was the case, then Billy Kaplan could actually work to bring his mother back, which would be a perfect way to resurrect Wanda and finally reunite her with her sons. It remains to be seen how Wanda would redeem herself after so much wrong, but it at least opens the door. This would also mean that Agatha: Darkhold Diaries is pivotal for the MCU, bringing back one of Marvel’s most powerful characters and re-introducing Billy, who could go on to join the Young Avengers.
