The MCU Secretly Solved Far From Home’s Weirdest Plot Hole

The MCU Secretly Solved Far From Home’s Weirdest Plot Hole

An MCU plot hole from Spider-Man: Far From Home has already been secretly solved in Ms. Marvel. While these two MCU projects are for the most part unconnected, a comment made by Bruno in Ms. Marvel episode 3 links the Disney+ series further to the larger world of the MCU and helps to clear up a weird years-old plot hole. Since the confirmation of the MCU’s designation as the 616-universe in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, viewers have been questioning how Quentin Beck, a.k.a Mysterio, knew this information back in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

When Peter Parker first meets the man behind Mysterio’s fish-bowl head in Spider-Man: Far From Home, Beck implies that he has traveled from an alternate reality in the multiverse, Earth-833 and that the MCU takes place on Earth-616. Eventually revealed to be a fraud, Mysterio’s comment was seen as simply a fun Easter egg for Marvel comics readers. However, in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Earth-838’s Christine Palmer confirms that the universe that Doctor Strange and America Chavez have traveled from is in fact the 616-universe, causing some confusion amongst audiences as to how Mysterio already knew this information. There is a small connection between this information and Ms. Marvel that could suggest that Beck’s universe designation wasn’t just a lucky guess.

In Ms. Marvel episode 3, “Destined,” Najma and the ClanDestines ask Kamala Khan for help returning to their home dimension, causing the young superhero to ask her best friend, tech-wizz Bruno, for help in researching inter-dimensional travel. He mentions that he has read through papers published by scientist Dr. Erik Selvig, who made his first appearance in the MCU in Thor. It is known from scenes during Thor: The Dark World that Selvig knew of the designation of their universe as 616, viewers can see the information written on a blackboard behind the then-institutionalized scientist. Knowing this, and knowing that Selvig has published scientific papers, it’s possible that Beck read Selvig’s work and used this knowledge to inform his characterization as multiversal-superhero Mysterio.

Why Mysterio’s Multiverse Plot Hole Was So Bad

The MCU Secretly Solved Far From Home’s Weirdest Plot Hole

When the universe was confirmed to be 616 in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, a plot hole was created in the MCU on par with Spider-Man: Homecoming’s “8 years later” title card. Since Mysterio was revealed to be a fake in Spider-Man: Far From Home, him knowing such massive information as universe designation numbers just wouldn’t be feasible. This not only stirred up questions in confused audiences, but also had the effect of undermining the true MCU multiverse before it had been properly introduced. It was an Easter egg in Far From Home that excited audiences for the potential future of the multiverse, but these hopes seemed dashed after the reveal of Mysterio’s real origin.

It seems obvious that Beck would have done research to create Mysterio, and Selvig has evidently been studying concepts like the convergence and the multiverse for years, so it makes sense that Beck could’ve picked up the information about the universe designation from Selvig’s papers, clearing up this weird plot hole in the MCU. With the multiverse becoming a key theme in Phase 4 of the MCU and beyond, there will certainly be more questions arising about this hugely complex concept. Marvel will have to be careful to ensure more plot holes don’t pop up as the MCU expands and develops further. While Ms. Marvel continues to include Easter eggs to the wider MCU, this comment by Bruno might have finally cleared up this Spider-Man: Far From Home plot hole.
