The MCU Reveals Civil War’s Avengers Problems Haven’t Ended

Ms. Marvel episode 2 reveals that Captain America: Civil War’s Avengers problems are still an issue in Phase 4. The Avengers may be defunct now, but Marvel’s recent movies and TV shows prove that there’s still a large number of superheroes currently doing their part to protect the world after Avengers: Endgame. Kamala Khan’s six-episode Disney+ series is providing a new perspective on some of the Earth’s protectors without actually showing them.

In a certain way, Ms. Marvel episode 1 felt like a celebration of the Avengers and several other MCU superheroes, particularly Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel. Kamala and Bruno’s trip to AvengerCon was jam-packed with MCU Easter eggs and references to multiple established characters. It confirmed that so many of the MCU’s heroes have developed sizable fan followings. Even Captain Marvel, who spent a very limited amount of time on Earth as a hero, had people like Kamala cosplaying as her at Ms. Marvel’s AvengerCon. The episode also touched on the public’s knowledge of the battle with Thanos and the Avengers’ efforts to take him down at the end of Avengers: Endgame.

While AvengerCon certainly glorified the Avengers, it’s become apparent that not everyone shares lofty opinions of superheroes in the MCU. In Ms. Marvel episode 2, Yasmeen Fletcher’s Nakia criticized Zoe for bragging about her rescue at AvengerCon when there was “another superhero catastrophe”. Her sarcastic comment appears to be a reflection of this idea that superheroes are responsible for a lot of the problems they end up fixing. And admittedly, it was Kamala’s powers that put Zoe in danger in the first place. Nakia also doesn’t seem to think that the arrival of “the budget Captain Marvel” is a good thing for Jersey City. Her thoughts on the matter are consistent with those held by people in Captain America: Civil War when there was a distinct lack of trust in the Avengers.

The Avengers saved Earth from the Chitauri invasion, but other mishaps – such as Tony Stark’s role in Ultron’s creation and what happened with Scarlet Witch in Civil War – greatly hurt public opinion of team. This ultimately caused the government to take measures to ensure they were held accountable for their actions. Years have passed since those days, and it seems that even after the Avengers revived half of the universe and beat Thanos, there are still plenty of people who aren’t enamored with superheroes in Phase 4.

No matter what happens in Ms. Marvel or any other upcoming project on Marvel’s Phase 4 slate, Captain America: Civil War’s Avengers problems are unlikely to end anytime soon. There will always be people like Ms. Marvel’s Nakia who don’t look favorably at superheroes or the impact they have on the world. And unfortunately, Kamala’s ugly – albeit successful – attempt to save a child in Ms. Marvel episode 2 may not help change any minds.
