The Matrix Resurrections Gets Free Streaming Home After Surprise Matrix 5 Announcement

The Matrix Resurrections gets a free streaming home shortly after the surprise confirmation that The Matrix 5 is in development. Resurrections is the fourth installment in The Matrix film series and serves as a direct sequel to the 2003 movie The Matrix Revolutions. It follows Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) 60 years after the events of the last movie. However, the pair have since been reinserted into the Matrix and built new lives, having lost all memories of each other and the past.

As reported by CBR, following the announcement of The Matrix 5, The Matrix Resurrections received a free streaming home. In addition to streaming on Max, users can now stream Resurrections on the free Amazon-owned streaming service Freevee. The movie has been available on Max since its premiere, as it received a dual streaming and theatrical release due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this is the first time the movie is available on a free service, although it will have ads.

What To Expect From The Matrix 5

The Matrix Resurrections‘ arrival on Freevee may allow non-Max subscribers to catch up with the movie before The Matrix 5. It’s expected the fifth installment will tie in closely with the fourth, as the latter introduced several intriguing storylines for the future. Meanwhile, it’s possible some viewers initially opted to skip the fourth film, given its mixed reviews. Some critics called out The Matrix Resurrections for a lack of creativity and unoriginality, while others praised it for its more profound exploration of the franchise’s themes. However, commercially, it was decidedly a flop.

Between its story leaving room for more and its commercial failure raising concerns for the future, the chances of The Matrix 5 happening were uncertain. Hence, it was a bit of a surprise when Warner Bros. suddenly revealed the movie was moving forward. The announcement left the details of the new movie fairly sparse. However, one notable detail that was confirmed is that The Matrix 5 will be the first in the franchise to lack involvement from the Wachowski sisters. Lana and Lilly Wachowski directed the first three films, while Lana directed The Matrix Resurrections.

For The Matrix 5, The Martian and World War Z writer Drew Goddard is taking over as director. Aside from the confirmation Goddard will direct, no official casting or plot details have been released, though it seems reasonable that Reeves and Moss could return. Meanwhile, one of the most substantial potential plots introduced in The Matrix Resurrections‘ ending is Neo and Trinity’s ambitions to remake the Matrix as they see fit. Since details on The Matrix 5 are sparse, many viewers may turn to the fourth movie for any insights it provides on the franchise’s future.
