The Marvels: Cast, Story & Everything We Know

Of all the upcoming MCU movies, The Marvels is one of the most interesting — and potentially pivotal to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe — releasing on November 10, 2023. Despite several delays and rumored story adjustments, The Marvels is on track to be the final Phase 5 movie released in 2023 and is a sequel to not only Captain Marvel but Ms. Marvel and WandaVision, too. Joining Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers in the second Captain Marvel movie are Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, a.k.a. Ms. Marvel and Teyonah Parris as the powered-up Monica Rambeau.

The Marvels was confirmed in 2019, with production underway by 2020. There’s been a barrage of teases, reveals, and The Marvels news since. Ms. Marvel and WandaVision hit Disney+, so the main pieces of the narrative jigsaw are in place. Littlewoods and Candyman director Nia DaCosta is at the helm, sharing The Marvels screenwriting duties with Zeb Wells, Alissa Karasik, and Megan McDonnell. Marvel Studios released the first official trailer for The Marvels on April 11, 2023, which revealed more about the storyline and casting for the upcoming Phase 5 cosmic spectacular.

The Marvels: Cast, Story & Everything We Know

Marvel Studios released the first official trailer for The Marvels on April 11, 2023, following the release of the film’s poster in February 2023. The Marvels’ trailer reveals more details about the team-up movie that stars Larson, Parris, and Vellani in her big-screen debut as Ms. Marvel. Recently, the release date for The Marvels was moved from July to November 2023, with many speculating that this was to allow more time for post-production work to perfect the visual effects for the upcoming film, particularly after a variety of Phase 4 projects came under scrutiny for their lackluster visuals.

The Marvels’ release date is November 10, 2023, a date that has been pushed back multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the constantly changing MCU schedule, and most recently, the need to perfect the CGI in post-production process. This is the fourth time The Marvels’ release date has been pushed back since the Captain Marvel sequel was first announced. Originally, The Marvels was slated for a July 2022 release before being moved back to November that year, then February 2023, and finally, the July 2023 slot it previously occupied.

The Marvels Cast

Brie Larson is reprising her role as Carol Danvers, a.k.a. Captain Marvel, in The Marvels, and she will be joined by Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan, a.k.a. Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau, Teyonah Parris’ former SWORD agent and SABER astronaut who gained powers during WandaVision. Monica and Danvers have met, although Monica was a child in Captain Marvel. Monica’s mother Maria, portrayed by Lashana Lynch in Captain Marvel, was Danvers’ best friend, in addition to being the Captain Marvel of Earth-838 in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Samuel L. Jackson will reprise his role of Nick Fury in The Marvels following his appearance in Secret Invasion on Disney+.

Zawe Ashton is set to portray The Marvels’ villain, and while her identity is still undisclosed, the trailer suggests she is a Kree Accuser, as she carries the same hammer weapon that Ronan used during Guardians of the Galaxy. Park Seo-joon of Parasite fame will be involved too, again in an undisclosed role, though his character can be seen in the film’s trailer. From the Ms. Marvel cast come Kamala Khan’s mother, father, and brother: Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, and Saagar Shaikh, respectively.

The Marvels Story

Phase 4’s Ms. Marvel ended with a post-credits scene that saw Carol Danvers swap places with Kamala Khan, ending up in the latter’s family home. This appears to be where The Marvels will pick up, as the trailer reveals that Danvers, Kamala, and Monica Rambeau switch places every time any of them use their abilities, their powers entangled due to a mission that Captain Marvel had embarked on which brought her close to an anomalous wormhole. This will surely cause many problems for the trio of heroes in The Marvels, particularly as a menacing new threat presents itself in the form of Zawe Ashton’s villain.

The official synopsis for The Marvels suggests that Danvers’ actions in Captain Marvel have left her “shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe.” This lends itself perfectly to the MCU’s Multiverse Saga themes, as The Marvels can set up the idea of incursions and reality destruction on a much grander scale while featuring Zawe Ashton’s The Marvels villain as a smaller-scale enemy for the team’s debut. The Marvels’ trailer also reveals that Monica is no longer working for SWORD, but instead SABER, though it’s unclear what this organization actually does, though Nick Fury appears to be a high-ranking official on their space station.

The first trailer for The Marvels gives audiences their first look at Captain Marvel since Avengers: Endgame and Ms. Marvel’s post-credits scene. It also marks the big-screen debuts of Vellani and Parris as Kamala and Monica, showing off their new powers from Ms. Marvel and WandaVision, respectively. Even Goose the Flerken is back from Captain Marvel, and the Kree take center-stage once again as the villains for the upcoming film. Watch the trailer below.

The Marvels is set to have a huge impact on the MCU. Kamala Khan was revealed as the MCU’s first mutant in Ms. Marvel, so this will surely get developed further in the upcoming film, and the new trio of heroes can help to expand on the MCU’s cosmic side, particularly since May 2023’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is the final adventure for that space-faring team. The Marvels will release on November 10, 2023, but the conversation surrounding the Captain Marvel sequel is only just beginning.
