The Marvels Can Reveal 6 More MCU Mutants

The Marvels Can Reveal 6 More MCU Mutants

After Ms Marvel‘s revelation about Kamala Khan’s mutant nature, The Marvels could reveal that at least six more mutants already exist in the MCU. So far, Phase 4 has featured two confirmed MCU mutants, Kamala Khan in Ms. Marvel and Namor in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever; plus one multiversal mutant, Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The in-universe reason why mutants hadn’t been mentioned before hasn’t been explained, but the arrival of more mutant characters in future MCU projects is a certainty.

Before Deadpool brings Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine to the MCU, Ant-Man and the Wasp will be busy in the Quantum Realm, Captain America will be busy fighting The Leader, and Blade will be busy facing vampires. The MCU’s only clear connection to mutants before Deadpool 3 is Kamala Khan, so The Marvels is likely to dive deeper into her mutation. And given that Kamala will be teaming up with Monica Rambeau and her idol Carol Danvers, there are a few mutant characters that also seem likely to show up in The Marvels.

Rogue

The Marvels Can Reveal 6 More MCU Mutants

If there’s a mutant Carol Danvers is familiar with, it’s Rogue. In the comics, the young mutant Rogue attacks Carol Danvers with her life-draining abilities, stealing her powers in the process. And while the Kree were the ones who removed Carol Danvers’ memories in the MCU, it was Rogue who absorbed them in the source material. Rogue, being a villain at the time, attempted to murder Carol by throwing her off the Golden Gate Bridge, but Spider-Woman saved her and took her to Professor X, who helped her recover. Carol Danvers bonded with the X-Men, and when they accepted Rogue as one of their own, Carol herself briefly made peace with her attacker, but their enmity remained for a long time.

Rogue is a key member of the X-Men. If The Marvels introduces her, there would be a certain pressure to introduce other X-Men characters soon. However, Rogue’s debut as a Captain Marvel villain would be an ideal way to explain her super strength, durability, and flying abilities, which were absent in Anna Paquin’s portrayal from Fox’s X-Men franchise. An immensely powerful mutant freely stealing a major superhero’s powers would also help illustrate the need for Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, even more so if Rogue is as villainous as her comic book counterpart when she’s introduced.

Mystique

Captain Marvel and Mystique in the MCU

Rogue may be Carol Danvers’ most famous mutant opponent, but she wasn’t the first one. In fact, Rogue attacked Danvers back when she was working with Mystique, her adopted mother. Previously, the shapeshifting mutant Mystique had been sent to assassinate her, but couldn’t get close enough. When Mystique’s girlfriend Destiny foretold Rogue’s death at the hands of Carol Danvers, Mystique took it upon herself to murder Danvers before the premonition came true. However, she failed again.

The MCU could introduce Mystique in The Marvels without too much pressure, as Mystique is a very independent mutant. Besides, she could debut as any human character who wishes to assassinate Captain Marvel, only to be revealed as a shapeshifting mutant later on. A double debut by Mystique and Rogue would present a fresh and comic-accurate dynamic for both mutant characters, and they can help develop the MCU’s mutant corner before the MCU X-Men are officially introduced.

Vulcan

X-Men Mutant Vulcan and Corsair from Marvel's Starjammers

Carol Danvers’ experience in outer space can bring the Starjammers to the MCU. The Starjammers are a group of space pirates akin to the Guardians of the Galaxy and led by the human pilot Corsair, who swore revenge on the Shi’ar Empire for enslaving him. Corsair is a regular human, But his three sons were born with an active mutant gene: Gabriel Summers aka Vulcan, Alexander Summers aka Havok, and Scott Summers aka Cyclops. While Havok and Cyclops stayed on Earth and eventually joined the X-Men, Vulcan was abducted as a baby by the Shi’ar and raised to be their future emperor.

Vulcan is the perfect link between Kamala Khan’s mutation and Carol Danvers’ intergalactic adventures. Since Captain Marvel was teleported to Kamala’s bedroom in the Ms. Marvel post-credits scene, Kamala could have been teleported anywhere in outer space. In The Marvels, Kamala could meet the Starjammers, who could in turn cross paths with Corsair’s son, Vulcan. Vulcan could either help Kamala harness her mutant powers, or he could become her first-ever mutant villain. Then, Captain Marvel could help Kamala and the Starjammers defeat Vulcan and finally meet her biggest fan.

Monica Rambeau

Monica Rambeau as Spectre aka Photon in The MCU

If Kamala Khan owes her ability to wield the bracelets to her mutant gene, it’s possible that Monica Rambeau also owes her ability to survive Scarlet Witch’s Hex (and derive superpowers from it) to a mutant gene of her own. In WandaVision, reentering Wanda Maximoff’s Hex walls after exiting caused Monica Rambeau’s cells to be transformed, allowing her to develop intangibility and spectral vision. It’s possible that other regular humans would have died or gotten seriously harmed by Wanda’s Hex, while Monica’s unique DNA used it as an opportunity to evolve and grant her superhuman abilities. If Kamala Khan’s bracelets only enhanced her innate mutation, there’s a strong reason to think that Wanda’s Hex did the same for Monica Rambeau and that she is also a mutant.

Carol Danvers

Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel in the MCU

To round out the trinity of female MCU mutants, Carol Danvers can be revealed to be a mutant all along. Similar to Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau, Carol Danvers was enhanced by an external source of energy that gave her superhuman abilities instead of harming her or killing her. In her case, Carol Danvers was blasted with an immense amount of the Tesseract’s energy, which gave her the ability to fly, and shoot and absorb energy. If Captain Marvel is revealed to be a mutant alongside Kamala Khan and Monica Rambeau, the fact that an Infinity Stone awakened her mutation would likely confirm that Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are officially the MCU’s first mutants, as the Mind Stone awakened their innate power back in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Professor X

Ms Marvel Kamala Khan and Professor X in the MCU

After revealing that all three stars in The Marvels are mutants, the most shocking character introduction the MCU could make would be Charles Xavier himself. While a multiversal variant of Patrick Stewart’s Professor X already appeared in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the MCU’s 616 resident Charles Xavier hasn’t made his debut yet. Ms. Marvel’s heroic adventure with Captain Marvel and Monica Rambeau could put her on Professor X’s radar, and the telepath could extend her an offer to join his secret school of young mutants. Such an exciting moment would mirror Iron Man‘s iconic post-credits scene, where Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury appeared before Tony Stark to reveal that Iron Man had become part of a bigger universe”. Similarly, Professor X’s debut in The Marvel‘s post-credits scene would signal the beginning of a new era for the MCU with the advent of mutants like Ms. Marvel.
