The Mandalorian’s Moff Gideon Actor Reveals He Deliberately Set Up Villain Return Fan Theory

The Mandalorian‘s Giancarlo Esposito has recently revealed he purposely teased the theory surrounding Moff Gideon’s Star Wars revival. For much of the show’s story thus far, Gideon has been the primary antagonist of the titular Mandalorian and his adopted son Grogu. However, despite Esposito’s presence in every season of the show, The Mandalorian season 3’s ending seemingly killed the Imperial. That said, many have theorized that Gideon could return given what was set up of his character’s cloning tendencies, potentially leading to a return for Esposito in upcoming Star Wars TV shows and movies.

Hilariously, it seems as though these theories were prompted by Giancarlo Esposito himself based on the actor’s comments to IMDb. In a video posted on the online database’s Twitter/X page, Esposito revealed that he deliberately changed subtle physical attributes of his character in The Mandalorian season 3. From shaving his mustache that was present in The Mandalorian seasons 1 and 2 to slightly changing his hairstyle, Esposito planted the seeds that the version of Moff Gideon who perished in The Mandalorian season 3 was one of the Imperial’s clone bodies. Giancarlo Esposito Deliberately Set Up Moff Gideon’s Potential Return

Giancarlo Esposito’s tricksy tweaks in appearance for Gideon in The Mandalorian season 3 seemingly set up the villain’s potential return. The idea that Gideon was dabbling in cloning technology presented the possibility for the character to appear again, though this seemed unlikely after Din Djarin destroyed the clones of his Imperial nemesis. Regardless, it seems as though Esposito himself is set on teasing Gideon’s potential return thanks to cloning technology.

This is equal parts interesting and hilarious as it indicates these teases were not sanctioned by Jon Favreau or anyone else at Lucasfilm. Esposito took it upon himself to tease his character’s future, marking a notable difference from Star Wars properties of the past in which character returns are baked into the story by writers and directors. This, above all else, shows how much fun Esposito had on the set of The Mandalorian, enough to even tease his character’s resurgence without prior approval or orchestration by Lucasfilm.
