The Mandalorian’s Absurd “Mustache Theory” Explained: How Moff Gideon Could Return In The Mandalorian & Grogu Movie

The Mandalorian’s Absurd “Mustache Theory” Explained: How Moff Gideon Could Return In The Mandalorian & Grogu Movie

As strange as it may sound, Moff Gideon’s inconsistent mustache in The Mandalorian could be the key to his return in The Mandalorian & Grogu. Ever since The Mandalorian season 1, Giancarlo Esposito’s character has been set up as the main antagonist Din Djarin must face. In the beginning, Gideon’s goal was to capture and study Grogu. Gideon almost saw his goal come to fruition in The Mandalorian season 2, before Luke Skywalker decimated his forces and whisked Grogu away to become a Jedi. However, something happened to Gideon in-between The Mandalorian season 2 and season 3.

Upon breaking out of his New Republic prison ship, Moff Gideon abandoned his old goal of capturing Grogu. Instead, Gideon decided to appropriate Mandalorian culture by creating his own beskar armor and weapons out of their precious ore. At the same time, he strangely attempts to create force-sensitive clones of himself. However, this plan ends abruptly in disaster as Din Djarin blows up Moff Gideon’s clones and ends up destroying the rest of his base along with him. Overall, Gideon’s defeat seemed far too easy, as if he almost let Djarin destroy his clones and his army on purpose.

Moff Gideon Didn’t Have A Mustache In The Mandalorian Season 3

Moff Gideon - The Mandalorian season 3, episode 8

The secret behind Moff Gideon’s strange plan in The Mandalorian season 3 may be as plain as the nose on his face: his mustache. In both The Mandalorian season 1 and 2, Moff Gideon has a small, stylish mustache. But in The Mandalorian season 3, he is completely clean-shaven. There have been many theories as to why Gideon lost his signature stache, with one of the most common being that the New Republic shaved it off while he was imprisoned. Nevertheless, this seems like a petty and pointless thing for the New Republic to do.

There are also many who believe Gideon shaved his mustache himself to either hide from the New Republic (which seems unlikely) or to represent his new goal. Much like Din Djarin’s Mudhorn signet representing his clan of two, Gideon’s lack of a mustache could be his way of distancing himself from the derelict Empire’s goals; despite being a member of the Imperial Shadow Council, he may secretly want to break away to gain more power for himself. With all this said, there is a far more convincing theory as to why Gideon dropped his stache in The Mandalorian season 3.

The Mandalorian season 3 has come to an end with an action-packed finale, complete with more than a few surprise twists and teases for the future.

It May Have Been Moff Gideon’s Clone That Died In Season 3

Moff Gideon's Clones as seen in The Mandalorian season 3

When Din Djarin encountered Moff Gideon’s clones in The Mandalorian season 3 finale, none of them had mustaches, and Moff Gideon’s “main body” was the same. In other words, it’s possible every Moff Gideon on Mandalore was actually a clone of the original one. This would explain why Gideon let Din Djarin destroy his clones so easily, and it may also explain why he himself was so easily defeated. If the Gideon Djarin fought was a clone all along, then the real Moff Gideon could still be at large.

On the other hand, Moff Gideon may also have stashed other clones of himself elsewhere in the galaxy. If this were the case, then the mustacheless Gideon Djarin fought may indeed have been the real one. Gideon may have sacrificed himself in a planned “defeat” against the Mandalorians, knowing that his force-sensitive clones would awake elsewhere in the galaxy and carry on his legacy. In either case, Moff Gideon’s lack of a mustache was a deliberate choice by the showrunners that could hint at Gideon’s big-picture plan to fight the Mandalorians.

Moff Gideon Could Return In The Mandalorian & Grogu Movie

If the real Moff Gideon survived the destruction of Mandalore, or if there were clones of his that Din Djarin missed, it means Giancarlo Esposito’s character could return in the upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu film. While it may seem strange for the series to drag Gideon back into the battle after his climactic death in The Mandalorian season 3, the series has yet to try and expand its antagonist outside Esposito’s commanding presence. Bringing Moff Gideon back to exact his revenge on Din Djarin would be the safest thing The Mandalorian & Grogu could do from a success standpoint.

In any case, The Mandalorian & Grogu would do well to flesh out The Mandalorian season 3’s rather rushed finale. At the moment, Moff Gideon’s sudden urge to shave before The Mandalorian season 3 goes unexplained. Until then, the audience continues to cook up theories on where and when his force-sensitive clones could return to the Star Wars universe. Whether or not Moff Gideon returns in The Mandalorian & Grogu or The Mandalorian season 4 remains to be seen, but if he does, it will likely have something to do with his mustache.
