The Mandalorian Season 3’s Darksaber Decision Makes More Sense After The Mandalorian & Grogu Movie Announcement

The Mandalorian season 3 finale took a shocking turn when Moff Gideon suddenly crushed the Darksaber with his beskar fist, and with the announcement of The Mandalorian & Grogu movie, the decision to discard the most important Mandalorian weapon makes a lot more sense. The Darksaber was first introduced to live-action in The Mandalorian season 1 finale, where Moff Gideon was seen using it to break out of his downed TIE Fighter. Gideon brought the Darksaber into live-action, so there’s a sort of poetic justice in him taking it out of live-action as well.

The Darksaber was a crucial item in Din Djarin’s journey with Grogu, as it allowed him to bridge the gap between the Children of the Watch and the other Mandalorian clans. Despite this, Din recognized that he was hardly leadership material. The opportunity to unite Mandalore lay in the palm of his hand, but his heart ultimately sided with his mission to protect Grogu. Thankfully, Bo-Katan Kryze stepped up and took his place as the last wielder of the Darksaber and the new leader of Mandalore. Consequently, this means there will be no Darksaber in The Mandalorian & Grogu.

Darksaber Destroyed in Mandalorian Season 3

Destroying the Darksaber was actually the best thing that could happen to the Mandalorians. With their cherished blade gone, there was no longer a reason to fight over it for the leadership of Mandalore. In fact, the Darksaber could almost be blamed for most of Mandalore’s major controversies in the past few centuries. Ultimately, it may have caused more bloodshed than any other lightsaber in history. Not only did its destruction cement Bo-Katan as the new leader of Mandalore, but it also ushered in an era of peace where the Mandalorians can stop fighting over who is the leader.

The Darksaber History Was Too Confusing For The Mandalorian & Grogu Movie

While it may sound surprising to some, The Mandalorian & Grogu movie may be the first introduction to these characters for a lot of moviegoers who’ve never watched The Mandalorian on Disney+. Reintroducing Din Djarin and Grogu’s characters to a new audience will be enough a challenge on its own. If the movie were to try and restate the Darksaber and all the rules and history that come with it, it’d likely bog down the film and distract from the adventure at hand.

The Mandalorian season 3 had trouble focusing on its main characters, which is something The Mandalorian & Grogu will supposedly rectify. If anything, the Darksaber was a burden for Din Djarin to bear; it caused him more problems than he could handle. With no Darksaber, the film is free to explore this new chapter in Din and Grogu’s life. In other words, The Mandalorian & Grogu promises to present new challenges—other than the Darksaber—as Din freelances for the New Republic and fights Thrawn’s resurgent Empire.
