The Mandalorian Movie’s Most Important Setup Happened In The Weirdest Place

The Mandalorian Movie’s Most Important Setup Happened In The Weirdest Place

There’s one key storyline that will no doubt be vital to The Mandalorian & Grogu, but the setup for this significant story happened in the weirdest place in Star Wars. Presumably picking up where The Mandalorian season 3’s ending left off, The Mandalorian & Grogu movie will follow Din Djarin and Grogu’s adventures while working under-the-table as independent contractors for the New Republic. Mando will also be teaching Grogu more about Mandalorian culture and their Way, which means that Mandalorian lore will be more important than ever to the future of their story.

Not much Mandalorian lore has been established in The Mandalorian, aside from brief insights into the history of the Great Purge and the Night of a Thousand Tears in season 3. Otherwise, most aspects of Mandalorian culture – at least, the culture of Din Djarin’s Children of the Watch tribe – are still unknown, from the formation of the group to the nuances of family names and special permissions for removing one’s helmet. Most of the history and lore surrounding the Children of the Watch has actually been established outside The Mandalorian, including an important setup for The Mandalorian & Grogu movie.

Oddly enough, the most important Mandalorian lore that’s been established thus far in Star Wars live-action is shared in The Book of Boba Fett. It’s in Din Djarin’s takeover episode of the spin-off series that the Armorer discusses a few essential topics: the history of the Darksaber, the Mythosaur prophecy, and a brief retelling of the Night of a Thousand Tears. This is also when the Armorer reveals that their people’s history goes back as far as 10,000 years. It’s the prophecy, however, that will no doubt be key to The Mandalorian & Grogu.

It was originally thought that this prophecy of “the Mythosaur rising to herald a new age of Mandalore” would take place in The Mandalorian season 3, and in some ways, it arguably did – but not completely. With the Mythosaur being spotted by Bo-Katan Kryze underneath the Living Waters on Mandalore in season 3, it’s become apparent that this new age is upon the Mandalorians, but the full prophecy hasn’t yet been fulfilled. That Mythosaur must emerge, and it’s more than likely to do so in The Mandalorian & Grogu movie, should the planet be threatened somehow.

The setup of this prophecy and the key lore established about Mandalorians is extremely important, which means it should have happened in The Mandalorian rather than The Book of Boba Fett. This points out a glaring issue with the “Mandoverse” stories; they are becoming too dependent on one another, and too ambitious in their crossover stories. Now, Star Wars will have to live with the fact that this important setup for The Mandalorian & Grogu movie doesn’t even take place in its own TV show, which is hopefully something the franchise has learned from.

The Mandalorian & Grogu hits theaters May 22, 2026.
