The Mandalorian & Grogu: Everything You Need To Know Before Star Wars’ Next Movie

Din Djarin and Grogu’s story will continue in The Mandalorian & Grogu, making several seasons of content essential to understanding the next Star Wars movie. Initially known to audiences as “The Mandalorian” and “Baby Yoda,” Din Djarin and Grogu made the first live-action Star Wars TV show a smash hit, becoming pop culture icons over three seasons of The Mandalorian. The connection viewers made with these characters kicked off the current era of Star Wars TV shows, creating an interconnected “MandoVerse” that builds off the other Star Wars movies and shows.

However, this means there is a vast amount of information to keep track of before the upcoming Star Wars movies. The Mandalorian‘s first three seasons are crucial, but its spinoff shows, The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka, also provide clues for Din Djarin and Grogu’s next adventure. While sifting through these shows to determine the most relevant content can be challenging, understanding a few essential moments from The Mandalorian will make it easy to follow Din Djarin and Grogu’s Star Wars movie.

The Mandalorian’s story will continue with a Star Wars movie. Here’s everything we know about the project, including cast, release, and timeline.

How The Mandalorian Din Djarin & Grogu First Met

The Mandalorian season 1 episode 1 still

Din Djarin and Grogu first met at the end of The Mandalorian series premiere on Arvala-7. The Imperial Remnant hired Din Djarin to track down someone they needed for their research, although they would not provide any concrete details. In exchange for finding this person, the Imperial Remnant agreed to pay Din Djarin with beskar, which had been stolen from the Mandalorians during the Empire’s purge of their planet. He used a tracking fob to locate his quarry to a warehouse guarded by mercenaries, where he teamed up with a bounty droid called IG-11 to shoot their way in.

However, Din Djarin was shocked to find not a 50-year-old being the Imperial Remnant had described but a helpless child. IG-11 noted that organisms age differently, and Grogu was the same species as Jedi Master Yoda, who lived to be 900 years old. Din Djarin wanted to bring the child in alive, but IG-11’s contract called for the asset to be terminated, so Din Djarin shot him on the spot. Although Din Djarin planned to turn the child over to the Empire, his attitude changed when Grogu saved him from a mudhorn, using the Force to lift the creature midair.

Din Djarin delivered the child to the Imperial Remnant and accepted his reward, receiving new and improved armor forged from the beskar. Even so, he felt guilt over abandoning the child, as he had once been a helpless foundling when the Mandalorians took him in. He betrayed the Bounty Hunters’ Guild by shooting his way back into the Imperial compound, freeing the child before he could be used for their experiments. The Guild tried to stop his escape from Nevarro, but with the aid of other Mandalorians, Din Djarin fled with Grogu and vowed to keep the child safe.

Who The Imperial Remnant Is (& How The Empire Survived)

Despite the destruction of the second Death Star, the Empire was not defeated for good at the Battle of Endor. Emperor Palpatine prepared a contingency in the event of his death, ordering the Empire to launch a brutal campaign called Operation: Cinder, which decimated several systems loyal to the Rebellion. A year later, the fighting between the New Republic and the Empire culminated at the Battle of Jakku, ending with the Empire’s surrender. However, Palpatine’s contingency was designed to end the Empire that had failed him and create something better, and the Imperial Remnant survived in the outer rim.

The remaining warlords formed a secret Imperial Shadow Council so the New Republic wouldn’t learn that a unified Empire still existed. They also used the New Republic’s amnesty program to insert undercover agents into the new galactic government, undermining the New Republic’s efforts from within. All the while, Palpatine was secretly alive on the planet Exegol, having survived by transferring his spirit into a clone body. Commandant Brendol Hux, who continued Palpatine’s “Project Necromancer” for the Shadow Council, would eventually be a founding member of the First Order, the successor state to the Galactic Empire.

Why Din Djarin & Grogu Are Fighting The Imperial Remnant

Din Djarin and Grogu managed to evade the Imperial Remnant for a time, but Moff Gideon was not content to let them go. Gideon promised the Imperial Shadow Council research on creating successful clones by studying Grogu’s DNA, likely concerning Project Necromancer. Unbeknownst to the council, Gideon had his own agenda and began creating Force-sensitive clones of himself. His chief scientist, Dr. Penn Pershing, could not breed such a clone without a sample of Grogu’s DNA, so the Empire continued hunting him and Din Djarin throughout the first two seasons of The Mandalorian.

Fighting Gideon was also personal for Din Djarin and the other Mandalorians, as he was the Imperial who ordered the destruction of Mandalore. Din Djarin and Bo-Katan Kryze eventually brought their two clans together to retake Mandalore, where they found Gideon’s secret base and engaged his forces. Din Djarin destroyed all of Gideon’s Force-sensitive clones while he and Bo-Katan fought to defeat Gideon, and Grogu used the Force to protect them from a massive explosion. With Gideon dead and Mandalore reclaimed, it seemed Din Djarin and Grogu’s trouble with the Imperial Remnant was over.

Grogu

Grogu is a former Jedi youngling who is now training as a Mandalorian apprentice under his adopted father, Din Djarin. A survivor of Order 66, Grogu was hunted by the Empire for his blood amidst their cloning experimentation. Rescued by Din after initially being his bounty, Grogu went on to be trained briefly by Luke Skywalker as a Jedi Padawan, but has ultimately chosen the path of the Mandalorians instead to remain with his father. Grogu is now traversing the galaxy with Din to fight the Imperial Remnant and learn the Mandalorian Way.

While no details about The Mandalorian and Grogu have been revealed, the end of The Mandalorian season 3 set up a few possibilities. Din Djarin officially adopted Grogu as his son, Din Grogu, and the two were sent to travel the galaxy as part of Grogu’s training as a Mandalorian foundling. Din Djarin also arranged with Captain Carson Teva to work for the New Republic as a bounty hunter, tracking down Imperials who still posed a threat. Season 3 ended with Din Djarin and Grogu settling into a peaceful life in their new home, with more adventures ahead.

The Mandalorian‘s spinoff shows also raise possibilities for where the two will go next. They teamed up with Boba Fett to liberate Tatooine in The Book of Boba Fett, and the bounty hunter turned crime lord could hire them for another assignment. Din Djarin and Grogu could also return to Luke Skywalker’s Jedi academy for more training or to go on a mission. Ahsoka set up Grand Admiral Thrawn’s return, but this will likely be saved for Dave Filoni’s Mandalorian-era movie. Either way, Din Djarin and Grogu’s previous adventures leave room for new stories in their next Star Wars movie.
