The Little Mermaid Trailer: Live-Action Eric, Flounder & Ursula Revealed

Disney is showing off their latest live-action remake with the new The Little Mermaid trailer. The film, based on both the Danish fairytale of the same name and 1989 Disney classic, revolves around mermaid princess Ariel who falls in love with human Prince Eric and trades her voice to the evil sea witch Ursula in the hopes of getting legs and becoming part of the human world. Halle Bailey leads the cast of The Little Mermaid remake that also features Javier Bardem, Jonah Hauer-King, Melissa McCarthy, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina and Jacob Tremblay.

After a recent update from director Rob Marshall about the film’s editing progress, Disney has unveiled a new The Little Mermaid trailer.

The video offers a deeper look at the next live-action Disney remake, namely Halle Bailey’s enigmatic turn as Princess Ariel. The Little Mermaid trailer also offers the exciting first look at Melissa McCarthy’s evil sea witch Ursula as she schemes to overthrow Ariel’s home of Atlantica, as well as Flounder and Prince Eric.

Why The Little Mermaid Trailer Is A Promising Sign For The Film

The Little Mermaid Trailer: Live-Action Eric, Flounder & Ursula Revealed

Though keeping much of the larger aspects of the film under wraps, the new Little Mermaid trailer should prove a promising sign for it. Following the release of the first footage for the next live-action Disney remake, many took to criticizing the film for lacking any major color. Others took to defending the film, pointing out that the footage shown in The Little Mermaid tralier was from a nighttime sequence, thus making it difficult for any colors to actually come through.

These criticisms may still continue through the new Little Mermaid trailer, as it still features a lot of very low-light footage in comparison to the brightly lit animated film audiences initially fell in love with. On the flip side, however, the new video does offer plenty of colorful looks at the remake, including the first look at the adorable live-action portrayal of Flounder, voiced by Luca star Jacob Tremblay. The trailer also nicely highlights the inclusion of Ariel’s sisters Perla, Indira, Karina, Caspia, Mala and Tameka, all renamed from their original depictions in The Little Mermaid animated film.

One of the other major highlights from the new The Little Mermaid trailer Disney seems keen to continue highlighting in the marketing is Halle Bailey’s singing as Ariel. Bailey, a five-time Grammy nominee, has opened up about the surreal feeling of getting to perform such iconic songs as “Part of Your World,” which has been featured in every trailer thus far. Many audiences have already taken to praising both Bailey’s voice and design as Ariel, and won’t have to wait much longer to see more of her turn in the role as The Little Mermaid hits theaters on May 26.
