The Legend of Zelda Mobile Game Reportedly Being Developed

Fans of the larger catalogue of original properties and video game titles created and developed by Japanese company Nintendo are potentially in for a real treat as the latest word has a mobile game version of The Legend of Zelda rumored to be under development. First introduced to audiences around the world by way of the seminal action-adventure title released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986, the highly original series has gone to spawn countless sequels and tie-in productions over the years – most recently in the form of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for the Nintendo Switch.

After refusing to cede to the rising trend of developing original titles to be sold exclusively for the mobile game market, Nintendo finally began developing just that last year with the release of the freemium social networking app Miitomo in March, before subsequently turning heads yet again with the release of the auto-runner Super Mario Run in December. Following the moderate successes lauded onto both of the formerly mentioned projects, it would appear that fans of The Legend of Zelda are in for their very own mobile game, too.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Nintendo may be working on a followup to Super Mario Run in the form of an all-new mobile game based on their original The Legend of Zelda property. Slated to potentially release during the second half of the year – following an already announced smartphone version of the equally beloved franchise Animal Crossing – fans of Zelda and Link may be able to take their favorite action-adventure game with them on the go by way of their smartphones in the very near future.

It would definitely make sense that Nintendo would begin looking to expand the range of titles currently on offer on both the iOS and Android stores, and seeking to develop a mobile game based on The Legend of Zelda after finding some success with launching Super Mario Run is a more than attractive next step. The fantasy franchise has long been a tried and true favorite among gamers of all shapes and stripes, and a mobile game based on the property would likely be met with plenty of enthusiasm.

Only time will tell whether or not a mobile game of The Legend of Zelda will ultimately be released by Nintendo, but with any luck players of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for the Nintendo Switch may soon have another even more portable version of their favorite action-adventure video game to engage with. On that note, here’s to hoping that the product in question actually sees eventual development and release.
