The Last of Us season 2 is bringing back a location from the second video game, as revealed in a new set photo. Based on the acclaimed Naughty Dog video game franchise, HBO’s The Last of Us premiered last year, following the journey of Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) in a post-apocalyptic United States. The show, which earned positive reviews and was a ratings hit, is confirmed to be returning for season 2, with production reportedly starting on February 12, 2024.
Now, as work on The Last of Us season 2 continues, u/breadfruitworrywitch shares a new set photo on Reddit, revealing the return of Greenplace Market. Check out the image below:
Greenplace Market was featured briefly in The Last Of Us Part II during one of Ellie and Dina’s patrols, with the pair finding the abandoned building filled with the infected. The new set image shows that the HBO series will seemingly be using a one-to-one copy of the store’s overhead sign.
How Faithful Will The Last Of Us Season 2 Be?
Don’t Expect The HBO Show To Be One-To-One Adaptation
The Last of Us season 1 provides a fairly strong indication of just faithful season 2 will be to its corresponding video game. While the series recreates many aspects of the game in terms of character dynamics and the broader strokes of Joel and Ellie’s story, a number of details are changed or expanded upon. The Last of Us episode 3, for example, chronicles the lives of survivors Bill (Nick Offerman) and Frank (Murray Bartlett) over a 20-year period, while the game only hints at these characters’ backstories.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly about The Last of Us season 2 last summer, co-creator Craig Mazin more or less confirmed that the show’s sophomore outing will follow this same approach. “There are things that will shock people,” he said, “things that were in the game, things that were not in the game“. The changes, he explained, don’t come from a place of trying to shock audiences, but from a desire to tell the most compelling story possible.
The Last of Us season 2 features some big story moments, including one particularly controversial Joel choice, but it’s so far unclear just how many of these specific moments will make their way into season 2. Mazin has previously teased that Part II might take two seasons to properly adapt, meaning some of these moments might not come until a prospective season 3. In any case, the latest set photo confirms that The Last of Us season 2 is one step closer to making its way to screens.
