The Killer Ending: David Fincher Details Why Michael Fassbender’s Hitman Lets [SPOILER] Live

Warning: This post contains major spoilers for The Killer. The director of The Killer is ready to explain the surprising ending of Michael Fassbender’s latest action thriller. Following the adventures of a highly trained hitman going on the offensive to protect his life at all costs, the movie features more than its share of blood, death, and assassinations. After brutally killing his enemies, however, the ending sees Fassbender’s unnamed hitman actually sparing the life of the man who ordered the hit.

While The Killer’s ending may be surprising, director David Fincher has a good explanation for the Killer’s behavior. Because his final target, Claybourne, has no idea where he lives or how to find him, the hitman sees him as completely disposable. He never even reaches the hitman’s notice as a potential threat, given his general ineptitude. Check out Fincher’s full quote below:

He’s the one person who has no idea where [the Killer] lives. [Leo] did smoke an entire pack of cigarettes out in front of [the Killer’s] property. So this is somebody who could deliver evil, or retribution, to him. When he finally meets up with [Claybourne], though this guy is probably involved in eight or ten incredibly nefarious things, he’s not the puppet master of it, he’s just bankrolling it. Look, it was a real bone of contention with everybody, who was like, Oooh, why are we not going to get our vengeance fix? But he doesn’t really rise to the level of having to be dealt with. He’s standing across from this guy in his Sub Pop shirt going, Are you a threat to me? You don’t seem like a threat. It seems like you could hire somebody who could be a threat to me, but it also seems like you’re easily dissuadable.
