ABC confirms The Goldbergs season 10 is happening and will address Jeff Garlin’s exit from the show. Garlin took his exit from the hit ’80s-set series back in December 2021 after a human resources investigation concerning his on-set behavior. The actor had been under investigation for three years, stemming from allegations of him displaying a “pattern of verbal and physical conduct” on set that discomfited the cast and crew. Garlin and Sony Pictures Television eventually reached a mutual agreement that called for his departure from The Goldbergs.
Garlin played patriarch Murray Goldberg in the series since it first premiered back in 2013. Following his departure from the show, subsequent episodes of The Goldbergs season 9 utilized pre-recorded dialogue and a body double for the Murray character on which Garlin’s face was superimposed in post-production. Back in March, fellow Goldbergs cast member Wendi McLendon-Covey broke her silence concerning Garlin’s exit, tweeting that the “season threw [them] for a loop,” particularly because the creators “weren’t about to re-write the 2nd half of the season.” Now, it seems The Goldbergs season 10 will have an easier time handling Garlin’s exit.
TVLine reports that ABC has renewed The Goldbergs for season 10. Additionally, the show will also address Garlin’s departure. Although not many details have been revealed, Murray will reportedly be written out of the series early in the season. More information will surely be revealed once season 10 gets closer to its premiere date.
Unfortunately, Garlin’s exit from The Goldbergs season 9 was not made alone. Ahead of its debut, long-time cast member George Segal passed away at the age of 87 due to complications during bypass surgery. During the premiere of The Goldbergs season 9, the series honored Segal and revealed his character, Pops, had quietly passed away in his sleep. Since The Goldbergs averages over 4 million viewers per week, making it ABC’s second-most watched program, it was inevitable that the network would renew it for another season. However, how the series will address Garlin’s exit remains to be seen.
Loosely based on the life of Goldbergs creator Adam F. Goldberg, the ’80s-themed series has received substantial critical acclaim since its first season. Critics have praised the strong cast and each character’s likeability. While some fans may be sad over seeing the end of Murray Goldberg, they can rest easy knowing that The Goldbergs season 10 is, in fact, in the works. Still, with more time on their hands, hopefully the writers can come up with an interesting way to write out Garlin’s character. It might seem harsh to assume that Murray will be killed off, but the creative team might be hard pressed to find another way to have the patriarch take his leave. Audiences will find out what happens soon enough.
