The Gifted will explore the disappearance of the X-Men, which is a key part of the show. The show is part of Fox’s own Marvel Universe, and follows a family who go on the run after they discover that their children have mutant abilities and have to fight to survive. But part of the reason that they have to go on the run, is because the X-Men aren’t around to stop mutants being hunted.
The Gifted is connected to the X-Men films in a similar way that Legion is. It exists in the same world but we don’t see any yellow and blue costumed heroes standing in the way of danger. Legion saw the show begin to tease that David Haller was the son of Professor X, but we never really saw Charles Xavier on screen properly. So expect the same from The Gifted.
We probably won’t get to see any spandex wearing heroes on screen, but we will get a variety of different mutants in the main cast. As Blink, Polaris, Thunderbird and a mutant created for the series called Eclipse will appear across the course of the season. The creator of the show, Matt Nix, has confirmed at TCA The Gifted will explore where the X-Men are in the world after they disappear, and that it will be one of the main mysteries driving the series forward.
“In our world one of the things we’ll be unpacking is the specific relationship of this group of characters to the X-Men. The X-Men are gone. That’s not a dodge. It’s a huge deal to these guys and to the world. It’s one of the central mysteries of the show.”
Hopefully the show delves into why the X-Men have disappeared, and where. Since a mystery has been established it’s only fair if at some point it’s solved. But if Legion was a template to go by, we won’t see the characters we’re familiar with onscreen aside from the occasional tease. But since the show won’t be about saving the world like in some of the X-Men stories, there’s no desperate need for them to appear. It’s going to be more of a character driven storyline rather than a big CGI driven battle every single episode. Although, we wouldn’t complain about seeing the occasional powered fight either.
We can expect to see character’s dealing with being shunned by society rather than saving the world. Nix has previously mentioned that the state of the world in The Gifted sees anyone slightly out of the ordinary as dangerous. The show will definitely make use of all the mutant powers at their disposal though, and with characters like Blink and Polaris, how could they not?
