2020 hit stealth-action game Ghosts of Tsushima is getting a movie adaptation from John Wick director Chad Stahelski, and development on the live-action retelling of the story of Jin and his stand against Khotun Khan’s Mongol invaders is well underway. The Ghosts of Tsushima game was a hit for Sony and developer Sucker Punch Entertainment, selling millions of copies in its first months of release. Amidst the slew of upcoming video game movies is a live-action version of Ghosts of Tsushima, and anticipation is already high.

The Ghosts of Tsushima movie was officially confirmed around a year after the game’s release. It’s clear why the game would work well as a live-action film, especially since it already pays homage to movies and cinema (including an optional “Akira Kurosawa” mode that removes color, film grain, and puts the sound through a tinny speaker). The 13th century feudal Japan setting is perfect for an epic historical drama, and those who’ve played through the Ghosts of Tsushima story are already wondering when the release date for the movie adaptation will arrive.

Jin Sakai looks on in Ghost of Tsushima

The cast of the live-action Ghosts of Tsushima movie hasn’t been revealed yet. However, actor Daisuke Tsuji voiced Jin in the English version of the Ghosts of Tsushima game and provided his likeness for the facial model and motion capture. Will The Ghosts Of Tsushima Movie Change Anything From The Game?

The script for the Ghosts of Tsushima movie is being written by screenwriter Takeshi Doscher (via Deadline). Ghosts of Tsushima is set in 13th century Japan, on the island of Tsushima. The isle is invaded by the Mongol fleet under the ruthless Khotun Khan (grandson of Genghis Khan). Protagonist Jin is helpless as his family and the rest of Clan Sakai are mercilessly wiped out by the Mongols without honor, and the now-claneless samurai warrior swears his vengeance.

Jin finds that the way of the samurai won’t be sufficient, and taking on Khotun Khan head-on is a fool’s errand. He instead recruits various allies across Tsushima and learns the art of stealth. The Mongols are eventually repelled thanks to Jin’s efforts, although along the way he earns the ire of the Shogun, becoming their sworn enemy despite working with them to liberate their homeland.

The story is an intensely emotional and deep tapestry of betrayal and struggle, with a historical setting and narrative style that directly pays homage to the works of filmmakers such as Akira Kurosawa. It’s expected that the Ghosts of Tsushima movie will directly adapt the story of the games, since it’s the tale of Jin and his defiance of the Mongol invasion that prompted calls for the 2020 hit to get a live-action adaption in the first place.
