The Flash Side-by-Side Video Of Grant Gustin & Ezra Miller Shows Wildly Different Suit-Up VFX

The differences in the suit-up VFX between Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen from The Flash in the DCEU and Grant Gustin’s Barry from the Arrowverse’s The Flash series are made clear in a new side-by-side video. While Gustin wasn’t part of The Flash‘s cast, the DCEU movie has generated many comparisons between his version of The Flash and Miller’s. Some of the aspects discussed by fans have related to story choices, acting, how the speedsters’ powers look on screen, and more, with a new comparison between the movie and TV versions of The Flash now emerging.

On Twitter, @HeroesUnbound shared a side-by-side video of Miller and Gustin’s Barry Allens suiting up, asking DC fans, “Who did it better?

The comparison makes sense, as despite The Flash movie’s multiverse storyline leading to some awful-looking CGI cameos, the VFX employed during Barry’s suit-up scene in question looks great. Miller’s version of The Flash starts glowing with blue electricity before quickly suiting up amid a burst of lightning. On the other hand, Gustin’s Barry Allen suits up by shooting his Flash suit from the hero’s iconic ring from the comics, running into it to suit up, making the two suit-up sequences very different.

Why The Flash Costume Suit-Ups Are So Different

There are some similarities between the DCEU and the Arrowverse’s takes on The Flash’s suit, such as one of The Flash movie’s Easter Eggs being that his suit is also stored in the comics’ The Flash ring like Gustin’s. However, the heroes’ suit-up sequences are very different. There are some reasons that explain the contrast between the two scenes, ranging from technical issues to creative choices.

The Flash movie’s suit-up scene has a larger scale, with more intricate VFX involved. That happens in part due to the DCEU film having a bigger budget for its VFX — which weirdly didn’t always translate to quality CGI — but also because of director Andy Muschietti’s vision for the hero. In the movie, Miller gets a new costume that leaves his prior armored look behind in favor of a sleeker design that sees his Flash glow up with energy as he uses his powers.

While Gustin’s Barry also sees lightning flash all over his costume as he suits up, his suit isn’t permeated with energy. Gustin’s costume is more similar to The Flash’s classic comic book style, and it also looks more real than Miller’s. As the Arrowverse series had a lower VFX budget than the expensive DCEU film, Gustin’s suit-up VFX could never be as intricate as Miller’s, but The Flash series’ team made up for it with the motion displayed by the hero’s suit shooting off his ring and Barry quickly getting into the costume. In the end, both suit-up sequences look great, with the DCEU’s The Flash having more intricate VFX.
