The Flash Makes Iris a Speedster in ‘Run, Iris, Run’ Trailer

Iris becomes Central City’s newest speedster in the trailer for next week’s episode of The Flash, “Run Iris, Run.” It will be a huge role reversal for Barry and Iris in the upcoming outing of the Arrowverse show as the latter takes on the mantle of a superhero, while the former sits this one out.

For weeks, The CW series has been teasing Iris suiting up as a superhero. Since leaked set photos revealed Candice Patton donning her own super suit back in January, fans have been buzzing about the reason she would take the mantle of a superhero for herself. Of course, at that time, Barry was still troubled with the Clifford DeVoe case, prompting people to theorize that she assumed her husband’s responsibility while he’s unable to. Now, we know that’s not the case, with the reasoning behind this character progression more fun and interesting.

Next week’s episode of The Flash will officially see Iris West as Central City’s new speedster. The episode, aptly titled “Run, Iris, Run,” will feature Mrs. West-Allen experiencing what it’s like for her husband to keep Central City safe. Unfortunately, Iris will have all the fun, at least in the upcoming outing, considering her new skills stem from Melting Pot (guest star Leonardo Nam) accidentally swapping Barry’s DNA with hers, leaving her husband without his speedster ability. The Flash continues to play around with the dynamic between Iris and Barry. While this role reversal is a fun subplot to pull this season, it also continues the show’s season-long attempt to push Iris to the forefront. For the most part of this year’s show (considering the bigger themes tackled), Barry is left powerless on several occasions and had no choice but to depend on Iris and Team Flash. Coming from being trapped inside the Speed Force, an unoriented Barry struggled to fit back into Team Flash upon learning that everyone was holding up fine with his lady love calling the shots while he was gone. When he was framed for Clifford DeVoe’s murder, Iris almost outed his secret just so he wouldn’t have to go to jail – though she didn’t and he went to anyway – and until the very end, his wife and the rest of Team Flash worked relentlessly to get him out of prison.

While Iris is a new superhero in the traditional sense, her time dealing with metahumans and meta-villains gives her enough insight into what goes down on missions like the one she’s about to be part of. Based on the trailer, it doesn’t look like she’s having any problem utilizing her new super skill. It will be interesting to see where the show goes with this trajectory for Iris given the possibility that Barry could regain his power and the two become the Fastest Couple Alive.
