Writer and director Kevin Smith, most recently known for his decidedly non-mainstream filmmaking endeavors Tusk and Yoga Hosers, has been a champion for comic book fans since the turn of the century with his acclaimed Green Arrow comic book run from the early 2000s and his beloved podcast entitled “Fatman on Batman”. Of course, arguably one of the best episodes in The Flash‘s two seasons thus far, the Kevin Smith-directed “The Runaway Dinosaur”, serves as yet another example.
Since his successful turn at the helm of one of last season’s fan-favorite episodes for The Flash, Smith has not been shy about his desire to direct other DC television series on The CW – Arrow most notably with the filmmaker’s recent comments concerning his villainous creation Onomatopoeia. The Clerks writer and director certainly struck gold last year in conducting one of the most purely enjoyable episodes of The Flash to date, leaving fans crossing their fingers in hopes that he would return to the Scarlett Speedster in future seasons. Well, it appears that audiences will not have to wait long to see the two reunited after all.
Kevin Smith has confirmed that he will be returning to the director’s chair for The Flash in the upcoming, highly anticipated third season. The Jay and Silent Bob creator recently sat down with Den of Geek to discuss a myriad of topics, but had this to say concerning his return to DC’s television universe on The CW:
I know I’m going back to The Flash, first week of September, to direct episode 7 of season 3.
Plot details for the episode, along with any information concerning guest appearances or even a title have yet to be released. That said, just getting Kevin Smith back on board to direct is a certainly a coup for DC and The CW. In fact, the ratings for the Smith-directed episode was among the highest of the entire second season. Not only did the episode attract quite the crowd, but those who did tune in largely enjoyed what they saw as it served as one of the season’s most well-received entries from a critical standpoint.
As alluded to earlier, last season’s Kevin Smith-directed episode of The Flash was an absolute triumph for both the filmmaker as well as the series. What resulted from the partnership was an hour of enjoyable television from a man whose love for the source material bled onto the screen. While his latest films have been not-so-beloved, “The Runaway Dinosaur” was all-but universally praised as an episode that turned out to be quite the turning point for not only Barry, but also the closing chapters of the season. It was the sort of oddball, otherworldly type of adventure we have come to expect form The Flash, and a great premise for Smith to tackle. All in all, it was simply a good fit.
There are still a lot of unknowns concerning the future of The Flash (especially after that Season 2 cliffhanger), and a countless question marks surrounding Kevin Smith’s followup to the fan-favorite episode from last season. That said, The Flash is scheduled to appear at Comic-Con in San Diego later this month, so more details regarding the highly-anticipated third season are surely on their way in the near future.
The Flash season 3 is scheduled to premiere on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at 8PM ET; Arrow season 5 is slated to air on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 at 8PM ET; DC’s Legends of Tomorrow will return on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at 8PM ET, Supergirl will make its season 2 debut on The CW on Monday, October 10, 2016 also at 8PM ET.
