It’s a shame that The Fault in Our Stars doesn’t hit theaters until this summer, because by all accounts it looks like the perfect Valentine’s Day movie. Shailene Woodley (Divergent) plays a sixteen year-old cancer patient who meets and falls in love with a boy called Augustus (Ansel Elgort) at her support group. Gus is an ex-basketball player who lost his right leg to bone cancer, and Hazel must take an oxygen tank with her wherever she goes, having been diagnosed with Stage 4 thyroid cancer at the age of thirteen.
Richard LaGravenese’s 2007 hit P.S. I Love You showed that a somewhat morbid premise needn’t be a barrier to making a sweet and funny movie, and the new trailer for The Fault in Our Stars is likewise very upbeat despite the though life circumstances that its young lovers find themselves in.
The Fault in Our Stars is based in the novel of the same name by John Green, and film rights were optioned by Fox 2000 just one month after the book’s publication. The book received widespread critical acclaim for the way it dealt with such very difficult and sensitive issues with sincerity and a sense of humor. The Fault in Our Stars is the second feature film from director Josh Boone (Stuck in Love) and was scripted by (500) Days of Summer duo Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber (who also wrote The Spectacular Now, starring Woodley). In September 2013 it was announced that Boone’s next directing project will be an adaptation of Stephen King’s novel “Lisey’s Story,” a psychological horror/romance about the widow of a successful writer who relives the past while simultaneously trying to survive her present.
Based on the trailer, The Fault in Our Stars looks equal parts heart-warming and tear-jerking. Protagonist Grace describes herself as a “grenade,” fearing that her death will be like an explosion that harms anyone who gets too close to her. This doesn’t seem to discourage Gus, however, who believes in living a good life, no matter how long it lasts. It definitely looks worth checking out, but take a box of tissues into the theater with you.
