The shocking turn of events at the start of Green Arrow #8 sets up a direct parallel between the current arc and one from over twenty years ago.

Merlyn’s Final Gambit Is Intended to End Green Arrow’s Family

Merlyn and Amanda Waller Are the Final Hurdle

Malcolm Merlyn Is Back

Green Arrow started out as a solo hero, just a spoiled rich kid who decided that he had to make a real difference in the world. Eventually, Oliver was able to build himself a family. He met the love of his life in Dinah Lance, aka Black Canary, and he even mentored younger heroes like Roy Harper and Mia Dearden. While he hasn’t always been on the best terms with his family, such as when Green Arrow cheated on Black Canary, the family truly does love one another, and they’ll do anything to be reunited.

Oliver has literally fought across time and space to be reunited with his family. The only things standing between him and a reunion are Amanda Waller and Malcolm Merlyn. As the preview says, Merlyn has one final trick up his sleeve to keep Oliver separated. Given Merlyn already turned himself into a cyborg to ruin Ollie’s life, his final trick will be suitably extreme. No matter what it is though, Ollie won’t stop fighting until he’s back with his family. He said himself in Green Arrow#5 that he will fight until he is either dead or with his family again, and he’ll settle for nothing less.

Green Arrow Has Earned This Long-Awaited Reunion

Fans Now Know How Long Merlyn Has Been Working Against Ollie’s Happiness

Comic book panels: Black Canary, Roy, and Connor embrace an older Lian, who they thought had been missing.

While the Green Arrow Family have been apart for a long time, fans only recently learned this was due to Merlyn actively sabotaging their happiness. That gave them a way to fight to be back together, setting up their grand reunion as a hugely impactful event. Just like Ollie, fans won’t rest until they see this family reunited, and have already done their part by helping get this series promoted from a miniseries to ongoing status. With all of that love and respect behind these characters, Green Arrow‘s family reunion promises to be hugely important – but it wouldn’t be superhero comics if there wasn’t some kind of sting in the tail.
