The Entire X-Men Reboot Was Sabotaged By Xavier’s Dumbest Decision

Jonathan Hickman’s House of X/Powers of X relaunch of the X-Men franchise in Marvel Comics established multiple possible futures for mutantkind by reliving Moira X’s 9 lives, allowing the founders of Krakoa, Xavier and Magneto to have access to incredibly foresight on their potential futures. One future that is looking more and more is the downfall of Krakoa and Arakko by the evil mutant Mister Sinister simply because Charles Xavier’s truly massive ego prevented him from listening to Moira’s warnings about Sinister’s intentions.

Powers of X #1 establishes that in Moira’s 9th life Krakoa and Arakko were created, and that Sinister’s inclusion in mutant society caused the collapse of their nation. Even though Moira explicitly told this to Xavier, and in turn Magneto, the joint leaders of Krakoa still decided to bring Sinister into the fold. Sinister is essentially a psychotic Nazi obsessed with creating the perfect evolutionary post-human. The inclusion of him in Krakoa’s society, and on their governmental body the Quiet Council no less, is already mind-boggling, but with the information obtained from Moira’s 9th life it is truly astounding that Xavier continues to allow Sinister to walk free, even if Krakoa is “for all mutants.” Although, it is less surprising than one might think, because Xavier has a long and sordid history of allowing his hubris to get the better of him, leading his people into horrifying scenarios.

Powers of X #1 – created and written by X-Architect Jonathan Hickman and the talented artist R. B. Silva – showed readers what Moira X experienced throughout her first 9 lives, and her 9th life lasted more than a century. The nation of Krakoa and planet of Arakko were created in this timeline, but the data page provided on Sinister’s great betrayal shows why he should never have been allowed to join Krakoa. Mister Sinister was tasked with creating mutant hybrids from different powerful mutant gene families and eventually created mutant “breeding pits” on Mars, forming armies of Chimera mutants. He then betrayed the mutants and defected to the the Man-Machine Supremacy, which the data suggests was a direct cause of the collapse of Krakoan society. In Powers of X #6 Moira explicitly writes in her journal that she warned Xavier and Magneto about the dangers of Sinister and his predilection for disastrous genetic testing, but they completely ignored her out of their obsession with the Resurrection Protocols.

The Entire X-Men Reboot Was Sabotaged By Xavier’s Dumbest Decision

In current continuity Magneto and Xavier brought the mutant X-Gene clone of Sinister into the Krakoan fold, asking him to catalog mutant DNA as a priority, so that it could later be used for Cerebro’s Resurrection Protocols, before mind wiping Sinister. Astonished at this lack of foresight Moira notes that Sinister has already made his first genetic Chimera–himself–implying that they are already on the pathway to this dark future. Xavier and Magneto’s manipulative plan to utilize Sinister’s scientific brilliance without letting him get out of control is clearly not going to go the way they thought, especially seeing as he has secretly allied himself with the supervillain Mastermind to create a cloning facility without the Quiet Council’s knowledge. If Xavier had simply listened to Moira when she warned him, or even gone to her before going to Bar Sinister so he could be reminded of Sinister’s future betrayal, then the greatest threat to Krakoa’s survival may have been diverted.

House of X #1 foreshadowed the creation of the planet Arakko by showing Karma planting a Krakoan Gate on Mars, so there is certainly precedent for the foreshadowing of Sinister’s betrayal of his fellow mutants. Truly all of this could have been avoided if Xavier had listened to Moira’s advice. Fans can make their own decisions on whether or not Xavier’s choice to include Mister Sinister in the building of Krakoa was one of his dumbest decisions by reading House of X/Powers of X and the Moira X-focused Inferno event.
