The DCU’s New Superman Logo Perfectly Solved A 46 Year Old DC Problem

The DCU’s New Superman Logo Perfectly Solved A 46 Year Old DC Problem

The new logo for the DCU’s Superman was recently revealed, and it has finally solved a long-standing issue with the symbol’s history. The Superman logo is an iconic piece of pop culture, and its design has withstood the test of time. However, while the design itself is great, its fictional history has been a little strange for a while now.

Old comic books often didn’t feel the need to come up with reasons why superheroes wore a specific logo, as this was understood to be part of their costume. The first Christopher Reeve Superman movie changed this for Superman, giving an in-universe explanation for why Superman wears an S on his chest. This explanation was used again in other live-action Superman adaptations, like Man of Steel. Superman fans have had mixed reactions to this retcon, debating how likely it is that an alien symbol would just be a capital S. Now, it seems like James Gunn’s Superman will fix that.

The newly revealed logo for Superman does not look like the letter S as much as previous incarnations have. Instead, the top and bottom of the letter blend directly into the red border around the yellow shield.

This makes the symbol on the shield itself look more like a red stripe across the shield. It has been pointed out that this logo looks a bit closer to the one Superman wears in the DC story “Kingdom Come”, further suggesting the story and its distinctive take on the Man Of Steel may be utilized as inspiration for the new movie.

Having a new logo for the DCU Superman is good for a variety of reasons. It allows audiences to be able to distinguish between live-action versions with very minimal effort, as this shield looks very different from the iteration in Man of Steel or the one Christopher Reeve wore as Superman. This new symbol is also good because it solves the issue of it supposedly being a Kryptonian symbol.

The new Superman logo is much more believably a symbol from Krypton than it has been in the past. This is likely because designers of previous suits wanted to capture the original comic book design, which was designed long before it was retconned into being the symbol for House El. As such, the new design finds a good balance between looking believably alien and still retaining the recognizable shape and style of Superman’s shield.

There have been no official comments on whether this was an intentional part of the new logo’s design, or if it is just a happy accident that it looks more believably alien. Either way, it is nice to have a Superman logo that fits nicely with the lore established by the 1978 movie, which has since been adopted by DC Comics as well. If Superman ever releases behind-the-scenes footage of the logo’s design, it would be interesting to know how intentional this choice was.
