Miles Morales debuted a brand-new Spider-Man suit this week, and his reason for making the change is heartbreakingly dark. In Miles Morales: Spider-Man #29, Miles admits that after his costume was destroyed during the most recent Clone Saga, he needed a new suit, as the old one has become tied to the criminal actions of the clones who stole his identity. In response, he gets a new costume altogether.
Ahead of Miles Morales’ 10th anniversary since debuting in Ultimate Fallout #4 in 2011, Spider-Man had his own Clone Saga, battling three different versions of himself. Unfortunately, those clones, namely Selim, committed numerous criminal acts pretending to be the actual Spider-Man – including stealing and nearly killing Miles’ young sister, Billie. Unable to shake meeting a dark version of himself – even after two of the clones died – Spider-Man decides it was time to get a new suit. He turns to an unlikely ally for help.
In Miles Morales: Spider-Man #29 by Saladin Ahmed, Chris Allen, David Curiel, and VC’s Cory Petit, Miles sees his shredded costume in the mirror and determines its time for a change. Admitting he would usually just get another copy of his most iconic suit, Miles says seeing Selim and the other clones wear his costume and have people believe Spider-Man is a criminal made him seek out something new. So, he texts a friend named K, who is more than happy to help him get new digs.
K turns out to be a young child named Kenneth, who Spider-Man previously helped during tough times. Kenneth’s mother reveals Kenneth’s world was turned around when Spider-Man helped hook them up with a Janet Van Dyne fashion mentorship, as Miles saw potential in the kid. Thanks to their impressive design skills, Kenneth offers Spider-Man a “top-tier” suit with several features, as its fire resistance, super stretchy, and “crazy strong.” Miles thanks Kenneth for help and is later seen web-slinging in the new suit, admitting the costume feels “different,” but that a lot has become different for him recently.
Change can be pretty tricky, especially after Miles has built an identity as Spider-Man in his old costume. However, after seeing his clones pretend to be him during criminal activities, Miles realized it was time for something new. The fact Spider-Man didn’t feel comfortable in his old costume anymore is tragic. But, thankfully, his new suit looks fantastic, as Kenneth nailed the new, unique design. So, while it might seem inevitable that Miles Morales will return to his classic costume in the future, his new look is certainly welcome. Miles Morales: Spider-Man #29 is in comic book stores now.
