The Crown Season 7 Would Be A Prequel, Creator Teases Pre-Elizabeth II Story Idea

The Crown creator Peter Morgan has revealed that, if the show were to continue, the next storyline would be a prequel set before Queen Elizabeth II’s time. The historical drama follows the reign of Elizabeth II and the lives of royal family members from the 1940s to present day. Season 6, the final season, will arrive on Netflix later in 2023, with part 1 releasing November 16 and part 2 on December 14.

Speaking with Variety, Morgan revealed that he has plans for the series after The Crown season 6 which would explore a time before Queen Elizabeth II. While the series creator didn’t offer any details, his prequel idea would explore a different era of the royal family. Check out what Morgan had to say below:

I do have an idea. But first, I need to do some other things. Second, it would need a unique set of circumstances to come together. Yes. If I were to go back into ‘The Crown,’ it would definitely be to go back in time.

What Era Could A Crown Prequel Take Place In?

The Crown season 6 will end the series, focusing on the modern age of Queen Elizabeth II’s rule over England. While it’s unclear to what year the story will take its characters, it appears the events covered will be ones that took place over the last 25 years. While Morgan previously confirmed the series won’t end with Elizabeth’s death, the show is expected to by homage to the Queen in some capacity by the finale.

While it’s unclear what a prequel series for the show would be about, reports from April 2022 indicate it would follow the reigns of the kings who succeeded Queen Victoria after her death in 1901. This would allow the prequel to lead directly into the original, covering roughly 50 years before Elizabeth II’s wedding. It would also be exploring a chaotic time in history, covering the royal family’s history during both World Wars.

Since The Crown season 6 might include flashbacks, it’s possible some of these could be used to set up Morgan’s prequel idea. It’s equally likely that plans for the prequel series have changed, perhaps going even further back in time during other important stretches of the royal family’s history. With almost a thousand years of history to pull from, the show’s universe could explore almost any era after covering Elizabeth II’s life.
