The Crown star Imelda Staunton has addressed the possibility of the show continuing into future seasons. The Netflix biographical show dramatizes the life of the late monarch Queen Elizabeth II, recasting the character every two seasons. She was played in her early years by Claire Foy in seasons 1 through 2, in her middle age by Olivia Colman in seasons 3 and 4, and in the period spanning between 1991 and 2005 by Imelda Staunton in seasons 5 and 6, the latter of which was previously announced to be the show’s final season.
RadioTimes.com recently asked Imelda Staunton about the possibility of the show continuing after the end of The Crown season 6. She shared her perspective that she doesn’t think creator Peter Morgan will return to the show, saying that “he’s been dealing with the royal family for well over 20 years,” also referring to his pre-The Crown works including the play The Audience and the movie The Queen. She suggested that he will “leave it alone” and that “I think you’d have to hold him down and strap him down” to make it happen. Read her full quote below:
I don’t think he will. I think you’d have to hold him down and strap him down, if you thought about doing it. He’s been dealing with the royal family for well over 20 years, I think. I think he’s definitely going to move on. I also think he has given it so many years of his life and examined it in many ways, in dramatic ways, in imaginative ways, in experimental ways. He’s put his head above the parapet and he’s taken risks. And he’s provided the most high-end drama with such integrity that, I think, leave it alone. He’s done more than enough.
