The Conners Season 6 Explains Why Dan Can’t Solve His Worst Roseanne Problem

The Conners Season 6 Explains Why Dan Can’t Solve His Worst Roseanne Problem

Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Conners season 6, episode 2.

The Conners season 6 offers an idea of why Dan cannot seem to resolve his biggest problem since his Roseanne days. ABC’s premier comedy continues its parent series’ take on middle-class America with the return to Lanford’s beloved family. With Roseanne now dead, Dan has become the sole leader of the family, although both of her daughters, Becky and Darlene, alongside sister-in-law, Jackie, have been offering a helping hand whenever they can. Years after Roseanne unexpectedly died from an opioid overdose, Dan has finally moved forward in his personal life, even getting re-married to Louise.

However, there are issues from his past that continue to hamper him even well into his twilight years. Arguably his biggest recurring issue from Roseanne that continued into The Conners is paying off the family home’s mortgage. The craftsman house in Lanford was bought before the events of the original show started in 1988, and the family has been living there for years based on its lived-in look. Several decades later, completing the house mortgage remains a big issue for Dan, and The Conners season 6, may have shed one of the reasons why.

The much-delayed The Conners season 6 premiere comes with a brand new intro that completes its erasure of a beloved Roseanne legacy character.

The Conners Season 6 Reveals Dan’s Undisciplined Approach To Money

Dan chose a new TV over his mortgage.

In The Conners season 6, episode 2, “Valentine’s Day Treats and Credit Card Cheats” the family deals with Bev’s unexpected credit card issue. Assuming that it is a case of theft, what they didn’t know is that Jackie and Roseanne’s mom made all the ludicrous purchases. When they reach out to the bank, they are informed that they essentially don’t have to pay for the charges when Bev dies, giving them the idea to use the credit card, and treating it like free money. Each family member gets their one big purchase, including Dan.

When Jackie informs Dan of this opportunity, she gives him two options: get a high-end Frame TV or have two months’ worth of mortgage paid. Surprisingly, Dan chooses to have the new TV. Considering how much he has been stressing over how to keep up with his mortgage, one would assume that he would take the latter option. Even Dan himself mentioned how it would be such a big help in terms of making timely payments. However, he just couldn’t resist the temptation to get a brand new TV.

Admittedly, other factors have made paying off the house mortgage difficult. Chances are that the family has to take other mortgages out on it for other big life purchases, setting them back significantly. That being said, Dan fully understanding how helpful the free two-month mortgage money from Jackie and still choosing the TV is an indicator of his bad financial tendencies. These seemingly inconsequential decisions contribute to the reason why he’s still struggling to keep up their mortgage payment schedule. Having a two-month advance would have helped them tremendously in getting ahead.

Why The Conners Needs To Keep Dan’s Financial Struggles

Being financially strapped keeps the Conners relatable.

From the beginning, the appeal of the Conners is their relatability as a typical working-class family in the Midwest. Roseanne did feature some creative and fantastical episodes, which were tremendously popular in the ’80s and ’90s, but for the most part, the show focused on the daily joys and struggles of the family. This has made them universally loved. However, in order to keep that original appeal, The Conners is forced to keep the family in this constant state of financial struggle.

The Conners Season 6 Drops A Massive Clue It Won’t Solve Its Big Dan Problem

Ahead of its much-delayed premiere, The Conners season 6 drops a massive clue that the upcoming year won’t solve its biggest Dan issue.

Otherwise, climbing the socio-economic ladder can make them out of touch. This was proven by the ridiculous lotto-winner plot from Roseanne, where the family supposedly became millionaires. The narrative remains controversial until now. This is also the same reason why Darlene seemingly can’t move forward in life. Every single time she gets an opportunity to have a better-paying job, she’s knocked down and forced to take a less lucrative job, which is exactly what happened with Mark’s college plot.

Will Dan Ever Be Able To Pay Off The Mortgage In The Conners

It would be the best ending fate for Dan.

For now, it seems like Dan will continue to be bogged down by the house’s mortgage payments. Speaking with TV Line, producer Bruce Helford revealed that Louise and Dan’s story will be focused on “working hard this season to try and get their finances righted and get a handle on the mortgage.” Louise is noticeably absent in The Conners season 6, episode 2, but expect that this plot will come up soon enough. Perhaps when The Conners is near its end, Dan’s happy ending will involve him finishing his house payments, which would be a great overall narrative payoff.
