Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Buccaneers on Apple TV+.
The Buccaneers, a brand-new period drama based on Edith Wharton’s unfinished novel and updated by Katherine Jakeways for Apple TV+, includes a cast bursting with fresh faces. The Buccaneers is perfect for Bridgerton fans with its thumping modern soundtrack amidst its period pageantry, but rather than seem anachronistic, it perfectly meshes with the very modern-seeming characters featured in Wharton’s 1938 novel, which follows a group of wealthy, spunky American women who travel to London in the latter half of the 19th-century in the hopes of securing husbands. The BBC adapted it in the mid-’90s with The Fall of the House of Usher’s Carla Gugino and Mira Sorvino, but now it’s Apple’s turn.
Even though it’s a show like Bridgerton, the characters in The Buccaneers feel like they could be interchangeable with the cast of Euphoria at times, which is not just indicative of Jakeways’ interpretation of Wharton’s writing, but the author’s ability to ground young people in universal truths. While some of the angst has been turned up for 2023 viewers, ferried by chords from Taylor Swift songs, the spirit of the book has been perfectly captured by the young cast including Kristine Forseth, Josie Totah, Alisha Boe, Imogen Waterhouse, and Aubri Ibrag. While much of the cast consists of relative newcomers, many of them have been seen recently in popular media.
Kristine Froseth As Nan St. George
Nan Is The Precocious Younger Sister
Kristine Froseth plays the headstrong Nan St. George, younger sister to Jinny, and the main heroine whose romantic trials take up the bulk of the first season. She helps save the nuptials of her good friend Conchita (pregnant with Lord Marable’s child ahead of schedule) and earns the couple’s gratitude, which translates to remaining in London after their wedding for the season and eventually being presented to the queen at her debutante ball. Froseth is best known for appearing Netflix’s The Society and the Hulu series Looking for Alaska. Last year she appeared as a young Betty Ford in Showtime’s The First Lady.
Imogen Waterhouse As Jinny St. George
Jinny Is The Sensible Older Sister
Imogen Waterhouse portrays Nan’s much more conventional sister Jinny St. George who, often mortified by Nan’s efferescence, nevertheless agrees to remain with her in London if for no other reason than to stick it to the elite of New York. Jinny’s adherence to traditional customs of the period slowly erodes as she’s swept up in a world of mistaken identities, cake mishaps, and other melodrama. Waterhouse is best known for Braid and the fantasy series The Outpost.
Aubri Ibrag As Lizzy Elmsworth
Lizzy Is The Dreamer
Lizzy Elmsworth is played by Aubri Ibrag, whose relatively short career makes The Buccaneers, on the heels of 2021’s Dive Club, one of her first credits. Ibrag fits right into the proto-feminist sensibilities of the series, imbuing Lizzy with enough vibrancy as to make believable the fact that the English aristocracy might overlook boorish American heiresses in order to secure their fortunes. Like Nan, she proves that New World manners have never been so delightfully unsettling to established norms.
Josie Totah As Mabel Elmsworth
Mabel Is The Realist
Mabel Elmsworth is the sister to Lizzy, played by a radiant Josie Totah, who represents distinctly that the universal truth of the expectations placed on young women to succeed in life and in love have always been the same. Mabel understands the importance of female friendship during an era where just because someone has a duke in their title doesn’t make them any less prone to sexual assaults.
The Buccaneers Supporting Cast & Characters
Alisha Boe As Conchita Closson
Conchita Is The Mentor
Alisha Boe plays Conchita Closson, whose wedding is the inciting incident for the two sets of sisters to travel to London in the first place. Conchita knows the perils of London society all too well, equating it to a “pit of serpents” and provides advice for the sisters as they navigate its perils. Boe is best known for appearing on Day of Ours Lives and for playing Jessica Davis in Netflix’s teen drama 13 Reasons Why.
Josh Dylan As Lord Richard Marable
Lord Marable Is The Perfect English Gentleman
Josh Dylan plays Conhita Closson’s betrothed, Lord Richard Marable, and the quintessential British gentleman. At his invitation, the Elmsworth and St. George sisters stay in London after the wedding to be presented to the queen at her debutante ball.
Matthew Broome As Guy Thwarte
Guy Is the Playboy
Matthew Broome is Guy Thwarte, one of Nan’s charismatic love interests who leaves quite an impression on her first arrival. Despite being a playboy, Nan is drawn to him against her better judgment. The Buccaneers is Broome’s first credit.
Guy Remmers As Theo The Duke Of Tintagel
The Duke Is The Broody Introvert
The other potential suitor for Nan is the brooding Duke of Tintagel, played by Guy Remmers. While the more stalwart choice, the duke struggles with social interactions. Other than the short Lessons, this is Remmers’ first prominent role.
Christina Hendricks As Mrs. St. George
Mrs. St George Is The Strategist
The mother of the St. George sisters Nan and Jinny, Mrs. St. George encourages the four young women to take the trip to London and remain in England long enough to find husbands. She understands that the experience might be the only way to improve their chances of finding love, particularly given how unconventional Nan is. Hendricks, who made a meal out of Mad Men, doesn’t have a lot to do in The Buccaneers, but she has enough charisma to make the most of even the smallest part.
Simone Kirby As Miss Testvalley
Miss Testvalley Keeps The Girls In Line
Mrs. St. George only approves the trip for the young women if her daughter’s governess, Miss Testvalley, will accompany them and make sure they stay out of trouble. Testvalley has a thankless job traipsing after the rapacious young women and provides much of the comic relief.
Mia Threapleton As Honoria Marable
Honoria Doesn’t Trust The New American Girls
The daughter of actress Kate Winslet, Mia Threapleton portrays Honoria Marable, sister to Lord Richard Marable, in The Buccaneers. She made her first appearance in A Little Chaos alongside Winslet in 2014, and has since appeared with her mother in the BBC series I Am Ruth in 2022. Prior to appearing in The Buccaneers, Threapleton participated in the remake of Dangerous Liaisons.
