Debuting in 2014 on Sky Open in its native New Zealand, The Brokenwood Mysteries concerns Detective Inspector Mike Shepherd (Neill Rea) who travels from bustling Auckland to the sleepy hamlet of Brokenwood to investigate a murder case. Finding he likes his new environs enough to take a demotion, Shepherd stays on in Brokenwood and partners with a local cop named Detective Kristin Sims (Fern Sutherland) to crack various cases.

Unlike its American counterparts, The Brokenwood Mysteries‘ seasons are relatively brief, allowing for pointed and interesting stories without too much filler. The series is largely carried by the chemistry between the country music-loving Shepherd and the straight-laced Sims, and though it follows in the footsteps of murder mystery shows from Brittain, it’s nevertheless an entertaining addition to the genre. Already a decade deep in its run, the likelihood of The Brokenwood Mysteries season 11 is quite high, but it hasn’t been formally announced yet.

However, despite not being renewed yet, the likelihood of season 11 is quite high just on the show’s reputation alone. With such an open-ended premise, The Brokenwood Mysteries could run for decades and become an institution like Midsomer Murders which is still running to this day after more than 20 seasons. The renewal for season 11 will likely come sooner rather than later, especially if the show is still expected to follow its yearly release schedule. Likewise, his partner in crime-fighting, Detective Kristin Sims, will once again be played by Fern Sutherland. While it might not be the most original arrangement in TV history, the chemistry between the straight-laced Sims and the unpredictable Shepherd is often more entertaining than the mysteries themselves.

Though the series deals with murders every week, The Brokenwood Mysteries is a great example of a cozy mystery series and represents a light viewing experience. With that in mind, it’s impossible to predict the story of season 11 because all of the upcoming episodes will have their own mystery that will likely be wrapped up by the end. However, it’s possible to assume that DI Shepherd will continue to irk some of the locals with his unconventional methods, and Detective Sims will struggle with her dating life. Outside of that, everything about The Brokenwood Mysteries season 11 is up in the air.
