The Boys Season 3: Butcher’s New Powers Fallout Teased By Karl Urban

The Boys Season 3: Butcher’s New Powers Fallout Teased By Karl Urban

Karl Urban teases the potential fallout of Billy Butcher’s new powers in The Boys season 3. Amazon Prime Video’s hit series The Boys burst onto screens back in 2019 and follows a vigilante group led by Butcher, who seeks to take to down Vought Industries and their corrupt lineup of superpowered humans, known as “supes.” Based on the graphic novel series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys was created by Eric Kripke, with Seth Rogen serving as executive producer.

Alongside Urban, The Boys sees Jack Quaid, Karen Fukuhara, Tomer Kapon, and Laz Alonso make up the group of vigilantes, while Anthony Starr, Erin Moriarty, Chace Crawford, Jessie T. Usher, and Dominique McElligott star as Vought’s “supes.” Season 3 will see the majority of season 2’s principal cast return, with one particularly exciting new addition to the cast: Supernatural‘s Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy. A recent The Boys season 3 trailer hinted at the series’ goriest season yet, offering brief teases of Butcher as he looks set to level the playing field by taking a form of Compound V that grants him superpowers for a 24 hour period.

Urban now discusses this interesting season 3 development, hinting that there could be some major fallout as a result of Butcher’s new powers. In an interview with The Guardian, Urban reveals the addition of Butcher’s powers led to a number of discussions as to what sort of harsh realities he may face as a result. Urban also hints that these new abilities could ultimately lead to issues in Butcher’s new adoptive father role, teasing a potentially heavy season ahead for his character. Check out Urban’s full quote below.

I had a lot of discussions about what having powers might be like, and I was like: ‘Well, it’s gonna hurt, right?’ It comes back to the question: what is the cost of power? The cost is that it actually causes an extreme amount of pain. […] [Parenthood is] a responsibility that Butcher never anticipated, and it’s at loggerheads with his objective, you can’t be a parent and a superhero-fighting vigilante.

The Boys Season 3: Butcher’s New Powers Fallout Teased By Karl Urban

The Boys season 2 ended with the tragic, accidental death of Butcher’s wife, Becca, at the hands of her own child, Ryan – after the pair had spent years in hiding due to Ryan being Homelander’s (Starr) son. While the extent of Butcher and Ryan’s relationship within season 3 remains unknown, Urban’s comments certainly point to the pair attempting to build some form of the father-son bond. Urban has offered a variety of exciting The Boys season 3 story teases throughout his promotional run, previously discussing how Butcher’s new powers will see him face an internal moral dilemma of whether to become a superhero or a supervillain.

Previous teases that Butcher would gain superpowers within The Boys season 3 sparked much excitement, as the already ruthless character now looks set to truly take it up a notch. However, it will be incredibly interesting to explore the harsh realities of having superpowers, particularly through the eyes of Urban’s character. Fans of The Boys will not be surprised to see the show touching on these somewhat heavier themes, and with the first three episodes set to release on June 3, there isn’t long to go until viewers learn whether Billy Butcher’s new powers will be more of a gift or a curse.
