The Boys: Frenchie’s Last Words Reveal His Secret Purpose on the Team

The Boys: Frenchie’s Last Words Reveal His Secret Purpose on the Team

While The Boys is a comic book series filled with gratuitous sex and violence, it isn’t without its sweet and heartfelt moments, including when Frenchie delivered his last words before his tragic death, ones that actually revealed his secret purpose on the team.

Frenchie, otherwise known as the Frenchman, made his first appearance in The Boys #2 by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. Upon his debut, Frenchie’s ruthlessness was clear as he didn’t hesitate to brutally beat down a group of guys in a cafe after they insulted him. From that point on, fans knew that Frenchie was not to be messed with as it established him as one of the heavy-hitters of the team, second only to the only other person in the group he truly cared about: the Female.

Frenchie’s time as a member of the supe-killing team, the Boys, came to a violent end in The Boys #69 by Garth Ennis, Darick Robertson, and Russ Braun. In the issue, Frenchie and the Female find out that Butcher, the leader of the Boys, is planning to launch an attack against supes that has catastrophic potential. Once they learn of this information, Butcher can’t risk them trying to stop him, so he takes them out himself by blowing them up. Knowing that they’re going to die just moments before it happens, Frenchie looks at the Female and says, “Je t’aime. From the first”, telling her he always loved her.

The Boys: Frenchie’s Last Words Reveal His Secret Purpose on the Team

Fans knew that Frenchie and the Female had a special relationship since they were first shown interacting, but it wasn’t revealed until The Boys #38 why that was the case. That issue detailed the Female’s origin, how she got her powers, and how she ended up with the Boys. Butcher first discovered the Female as she was locked in a cage, deemed too dangerous to be allowed to roam free by the company that took possession of her after her superpowers developed. When Butcher found the Female, he wanted to keep her locked up and only let her out when there were supes to kill, agreeing with her former captors that she was just too dangerous. Frenchie, however, couldn’t let that happen. He believed the Female should be treated like a human being, and made it his mission on the team to take care of her. Because of Frenchie’s actions, it became obvious that he felt a sense of responsibility toward the Female and wanted her to have the best life possible. Not only did Frenchie ensure her freedom while fighting alongside the Boys, but he also helped her with her mental conditions as well. There was a darkness within the Female, one that drove her to kill. So, Frenchie would regularly produce supe targets in need of a “spanking” for the Female and the Boys to take care of, not because he wanted to further the mission of the team, but to give the Female something to take her rage out on.

While he was a valued member of the Boys and believed in what they were doing, Frenchie’s main goal was to take care of the Female and give her anything she needed. These real acts of true love make his last words so much more impactful and reveal his secret purpose for being on the team.
