The Boruto Anime’s Second Part: Everything We Know So Far

It’s the end of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations the anime, but the beginning of Boruto’s own story, as preparations commence for producing a follow-up animated series to the long-running Naruto sequel. After six years of nearly weekly content that produced almost 300 episodes, it’s safe to say that Boruto is incredibly prolific. At 293 episodes, Boruto has already eclipsed the original Naruto’s 220. However, productivity can be a burden for anime, especially when the manga source material has only 79 chapters and is on a monthly publication schedule. In Boruto‘s case, while it’s done a solid job adapting the manga, a large part of the series has been focussed on non-canonical stories. While these filler episodes vary in quality, many fans would argue these are problematic because there was little effort to link or tie them into the underlying Boruto-Naruto universe. So more than a few fans felt conflicted with the announcement that the Boruto anime would receive a second part before it had fully adapted its manga source material. Though not much is known about the second part of the prolific anime series, here is everything fans know about the Boruto anime’s second part.

The Boruto Anime’s Second Part: Everything We Know So Far

After the official announcement that the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations anime, which had been on the air since 2017 would be ending at the end of the month with Episode 293, Honda Masaya, the scriptwriter of the show, went on Twitter to post his feelings on the conclusion of Part 1.

Despite the lack of a definitive premiere date for the second series, Masaya nevertheless stresses the point that the anime will return. More interestingly, his inclusion of the attached image with just the word “Boruto” seems to suggest that whenever the anime does return, the primary focus will be on Boruto‘s personal story rather than on him as a continuation of his father’s story.

Confirmation of a second series came in a March 9, 2023, announcement posted to the official Naruto web page. It was sandwiched between a statement that Part 1 would be ending and a statement announcing four all-new episodes of the Naruto anime will begin airing in October 2023. The confirmation, however, did not include a specific date for its return, other than the statement that “part two of the anime is already in the works”.

Boruto Part 2 Story Details

With Part 1 covering the manga up until Chapter 67, the story details will depend on when the series will return. If Part 2 begins in a few months, there won’t be much material from the manga to adapt. In this case, fans should expect more anime-only stories that can run the gamut of content. Conversely, if Part 2 returned in six months or a year’s time, the story could follow the manga much more faithfully. This will also be affected by the frequency of episodes. If the weekly schedule plan remains, no matter when the series returns, it will quickly catch up to the manga. But based on the ending to Part 1, one fact is clear, Part 2 is likely to include the time skip revealed in the story’s introduction.

Regardless of when the series returns though, fans can be confident that Part 2 of Boruto will not begin with the time skip many have been hotly anticipating. With that leap in time still far off, this may be the chance Boruto has to finally live or die outside his father’s shadow.
