The Birds of Prey Debut New Jungle Costumes – Perfect for Fighting Dinosaurs

Warning: Contains potential spoilers for Birds of Prey #11!

DC revealed in its July 2024 solicitations that the fierce Birds of Prey will soon be going prehistoric — to battle dinosaurs. Leonardo Romero’s stunning cover for Birds of Prey #11 sees DC’s iconic team of heroines get new costumes to suit their escapades in the jungle.

Romero’s lush and vibrant cover for Birds of Prey #11 by Kelly Thompson, Gavin Guidry, and Javier Pina pits the current Birds against a group of velociraptors, a clever match-up since the word “raptor” can refer to both this type of dino or any bird of prey. As the Birds travel through worlds to rescue Batgirl, an action-packed brawl against dinosaurs ensues.

The Birds of Prey’s personal failings threaten to turn an advantage into a disadvantage as their search for Barbara continues to be more “fight for their lives” than “search for Oracle.” Oh, and there are dinosaurs.

The current roster of Black Canary, Vixen, Big Barda, Cassandra Cain’s Batgirl, and Sin sport all-new looks to accommodate the fight’s jungle setting. They’re forced to quickly adapt to their surroundings as an unknown villain has the Birds and Barbara trapped in an ever-changing portal trying to kill them.

The Birds of Prey Go Prehistoric to Rescue Barbara Gordon

The Team Must Fight a Mysterious Villain

These beloved DC superheroes travel to a Jurassic world as the Birds of Prey hunt down Barbara Gordon’s abductor, a mysterious villain who’s been plaguing the team since before the run’s first issue. Barbara Gordon as Oracle created the Birds of Prey with Black Canary but has been absent for a large part of their current run for reasons that were initially kept secret. In Birds of Prey #6 by Thompson, Romero, Jordie Bellaire, and Clayton Cowles, the time-traveling Maps Mizoguchi reveals that she and the fan-favorite DC team repeatedly witnessed Barbara Gordon’s death, as orchestrated by a still-unknown assailant.

Black Canary vows that Barbara won’t be killed again under the watch of the Birds of Prey, and the team begins an investigation that leads them to switch up their roster, adding Barbara’s Batgirl and Vixen. After Vixen’s fashion show goes wrong in Birds of Prey #8 by Thompson, Pina, and David López, Barbara is abducted through the portal that still has the team trapped through the upcoming eleventh issue. Birds of Prey #11 will see the heroes wade through prehistoric land riddled with dinosaurs as they continue their search for Barbara.

Dinosaurs Take Over DC Comics in July 2024

Batman, Robin, and Booster Gold Take on Their Own Dinos

Batman and Robin #11 and Batman: The Brave and the Bold #15 variant covers featuring dinosaurs, Jurassic League, Booster Gold

The Birds of Prey aren’t the only DC characters dealing with dinosaurs in summer 2024, as July’s solicitations reveal other series going prehistoric. DC’s solicits confirm that Batman and Robin #11 by Joshua Williamson and Juan Ferreyra kicks off a new arc as Bruce and Damian Wayne arrive at Dinosaur Island. Additionally, the anthology series Batman: The Brave and the Bold continues a storyline in #15 featuring Booster Gold teaming up with the Jurassic League: dinosaur versions of DC’s Justice League heroes. The Birds of Prey may feature the summer’s most dino-action, though, as Romero’s cover is the only one showing superheroes actually going toe-to-toe with the prehistoric beasts.

With new costumes that could be right out of Marvel’s Savage Land, DC’s superheroines are ready to tackle the Jurassic land they have to contend with as they track down their team’s creator. As the elusive villain tries to take the Birds down by taking them through strange environments, they’ll have to acclimate to the treacherous jungle landscape if they want to find Barbara before it’s too late. Though details are still scarce on how they’ve ended up here or how they can escape, the Birds of Prey’s upcoming scrap with prehistoric beasts is bound to be an uproarious read.

Birds of Prey #11 is available July 3rd, 2024 from DC Comics.
