Not all hope (and fun) is lost now that Spider-Man has left the Marvel Cinematic Universe – Sony can still have a lot of fun with the character and his story, and it all starts with the title for Spider-Man 3. August was a busy month for Marvel Studios, with a bunch of announcements at D23 Expo and the news about their split with Sony, which made Spider-Man gather his stuff and go back to Sony (even though he never really left).
Disney and Sony split over Spider-Man, with Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige no longer involved in the production of future Spider-Man films. It was a big punch to the gut for many Spider-Man (and MCU) fans who were looking forward to seeing the character’s story in this connected universe, especially after that cliffhanger in the mid-credits scene in Spider-Man: Far From Home. But this doesn’t mean Spider-Man can’t continue having fun somewhere else, and Sony can take the opportunity to showcase its sense of humor with the title for Spider-Man 3.
Sony will continue with Spider-Man as viewers know him – that is, played by Tom Holland. This current Spider-Man was introduced in Captain America: Civil War in 2016, and got his first solo film the following year with Spider-Man: Homecoming, a reference not only to the “homecoming” high school tradition but also to his arrival to the MCU. The sequel was titled Spider-Man: Far From Home, in reference to Peter going on a school trip to Europe. Following the “home” theme, a title for Spider-Man 3 could be Spider-Man Comes Home: it fits the theme, it references the Sony-Marvel split, and represents his (full) return to Sony.
Given that Spider-Man: Far From Home ended on a big cliffhanger, with Spider-Man’s identity being exposed and J. Jonah Jameson (played once more by J.K Simmons) making his first appearance in this new timeline, Sony will have to get creative with the story for the next Spider-Man film and somehow justify the absence of elements from the MCU. The title Spider-Man Comes Home could be a good start for this new Spidey era and would prove that Sony can also have fun with it, not just Marvel, and it could be a nice title for the closing chapter of this timeline, if they decide to end it with Spider-Man 3.
Whatever happens with Spider-Man back home at Sony, the studio has plenty of room for creativity not only with the character and the story, but also with its connection to other Sony/Marvel properties (Venom and Morbius), and, hopefully, they will give it a proper title – not just Spider-Man 3, as they have done before.
