The Batman’s Jeffrey Wright Gets Comic Book Style Commissioner Gordon Art

Jeffrey Wright’s Commissioner Gordon gets a comic-book style makeover in a piece of The Batman fan art. Introduced in Detective Comics # 27 (1939), Commissioner Gordon was Batman’s first true supporting character. James Gordon has gone on to become the caped crusader’s most consistent ally; sharing Batman’s dedication to ridding Gotham of crime. Gordon is often seen sporting a trench coat, mustache, and using the iconic Bat-Signal to summon his vigilante friend (who will then usually disappear mid-conversation).

Four actors have appeared on Gordon in a live-action feature: Neil Hamilton, Pat Hingle, Gary Oldman, and, more recently, J.K. Simmons in 2017’s Justice League (as well as Zack Snyder’s upcoming cut of Justice League). Jeffrey Wright will not only be the fifth actor to play the police commissioner but the first of color in Matt Reeves’ Batman reboot. The Batman‘s first teaser trailer dropped at DC FanDome and give fans a glimpse of Wright’s Gordon (mustache and all).

Storyboard artist and illustrator, Gavin Fullerton, recently shared a comic-book/noir style picture depicting Wright’s Gordon. This new piece of black-and-white fan art sees Wright standing in the rain next to the Bat-Signal, waiting for the Dark Knight to arrive. Check it out below.

While no Bat-Signal was present in the recent teaser, Gordon does read a riddle to Robert Pattinson’s Batman early on. That said, one can assume that the two men are already allies. Drawing inspiration from Batman: Year Two, the film is set to follow Bruce Wayne’s second year as the famed crime-fighter. The Batman will simultaneously serve as an origin story for many members of Batman’s Rogues Gallery: Oswald Cobblepot (Colin Farrell), Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), and Paul Dano’s Riddler (the main antagonist). Given the time frame, It’s unclear if Gordon will hold the position of “commissioner” at the beginning of The Batman or if he’ll be promoted later.

Plot details have been kept under wraps, but Reeves has been very open about his intention to explore Batman’s label as the “World’s Greatest Detective,” a mantel he could not have achieved without his long-time ally. Whether it’s as a sergeant, captain, or commissioner, fans have been (and will remain) excited to see Wright in The Batman. In response to this, Wright did his research; reading the first issues of Batman comics to prepare for his role. Fullerton’s illustration accurately reflects what appears to be Wright’s faithful interpretation of Jim Gordon and the noir aesthetic of the upcoming film.
