The Batman’s Commissioner Gordon, Jeffery Wright, Announces Start of Filming

Actor Jeffery Wright has announced DC’s The Batman has begun filming. This newest Batman film stars Robert Pattinson as the titular hero and is set to release in theaters in the Summer of 2021.

Recently, it was announced Jeffery Wright will be playing Comissioner Gordon, one of Batman’s most iconic allies. The character is known for aiding the Dark Knight in his heroic efforts throughout the majority of his career, as well as keeping him in the good graces of the Gotham City Police. Wright himself has had a long and successful career in both film and television. He was won several awards for his work, including an Emmy and a Golden Globe for his turn as Belize in the critically-acclaimed miniseries Angels in America. Interestingly enough, some of Wright’s most iconic roles are characters who aid the protagonist of their respective story, including Felix Leiter in Casino Royale and Beetee in The Hunger Games franchise. His most recent role has been as Bernard Lowe in HBO’s sci-fi western Westworld.

Wright recently took to Twitter to announce that he is off to begin filming for The Batman. Jet-lagged, Wright tweeted he woke up a couple of hours too early and is now “off to Gotham” at 4:45 am to begin filming. Director Matt Reeves revealed that Wright would be playing Commissioner Gordon in October 2019, the newest actor to take on the classic Batman role after J.K. Simmons, who played the commissioner in 2018’s Justice League.

Wright isn’t the only person who uses Twitter to express his excitement for the film. Matt Reeves has used the platform for The Batman’s casting announcements, enthusiastically tweeting out gifs of actors and the roles they will be playing. Since October 2019, Reeves has announced Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano as The Riddler, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and John Turturro as Carmine Falcone.

A Batman solo film has been in development for years, with Ben Affleck signed on to reprise his role as Batman/Bruce Wayne, as well as producing and directing the film. However, after Affleck dropped out of Batman entirely, Matt Reeves signed on to direct, and it was announced back in May 2019 that Robert Pattinson would replace Affleck. It is unclear how The Batman will fit into the rest of the DCEU, but, based on his casting, it is clear that Matt Reeves has a specific vision for how he want to portray these iconic characters, and it might not fit Warner Bros. vision for the rest of the franchise. Whether The Batman its a stand-alone film or not, fans can take pleasure in the enthusiasm both the cast and the director have for this new superhero movie.
