The Batman Cast Recalls First Impressions Of Pattinson’s Batsuit

The stars of The Batman recall their first impressions of Robert Pattinson’s Batsuit. Few upcoming movies seem to have the same level of anticipation as DC’s The Batman. Directed by Matt Reeves, the film was originally scheduled to debut last year, but the coronavirus pandemic pushed it back to this weekend. Box office projections have The Batman opening to at least $100 million, hinting at how eager fans are to see the movie. Beyond that, the film has been greeted with positive reviews from critics, many of which suggested this is one of the best Batman movies of all time.

The Batman stars Robert Pattinson as the titular hero. Tortured by his inner demons, this Bruce Wayne is now in his second year of being Batman, and he’s set to face his biggest challenge yet when the Riddler (Paul Dano) begins murdering members of Gotham’s elite. Surrounding Bruce are both enemies and allies alike, from a pre-Penguin Oswald Cobblepot (Colin Farrell) and Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz) to Alfred Pennyworth (Andy Serkis) and Jim Gordon (Jeffrey Wright). To create The Batman, Reeves has crafted a unique take on the hero’s entire mythology, and that extends to his supporting characters.

Reeves and his creative team has also designed a pretty awesome Batsuit. Fans have been abuzz about Pattinson’s Batman costume since it was first unveiled in early 2020, and it turns out the movie’s stars felt similarly when they saw it on set. Pattinson, Kravitz, Wright, and Dano sat down recently with IMDb to answer some burning questions, and they all revealed what their first impressions of the Batsuit were. They said:

Jeffrey Wright: When we rehearsed, he was only in the cowl and with the cowl I could see he was slightly self conscious about like, “Is this going to work?” And I looked at him and was like ah interesting… then he went back and changed and came out and it was full on. He was the Batman! It just looked right.

Paul Dano: It was great to see Rob step on the set. I remember Day 2 going, “Ok… I’m making a Batman movie!”

Robert Pattinson: It was such a long shoot that every kind of two or three moments or so you walked past a reflection in the window or you’d see your shadow on the floor or something and just see the little ears coming up. It would suddenly just click to you, but most of the time it was just in the back of your mind. Still today, I’m driving past billboards and it is bizarre to me. It’s absolutely bizarre! It’s funny because you don’t really think how iconic the character is when you’re playing it. You’re just kind of thinking about all the details all the time and you can’t really see the macro idea. And then seeing it on a billboard for some reason, I was driving down the street the other day like…

Zoë Kravitz: That’s me!

RP: Hang on a second… that was a real thing?

*Laughter*

The Batman Cast Recalls First Impressions Of Pattinson’s Batsuit

If it only takes one look at the complete costume to decide that Pattinson has properly transformed into Batman, then it’s safe to say the Batsuit is a success. A lot of work went into designing the Batsuit for The Batman, which makes sense considering the details weaved into its construction (like, for example, the guns in his breastplate). Wearing a superhero costume in real life might feel a little silly, but it sounds like for the cast of The Batman, Pattinson’s Batsuit went a long way in setting the tone on set.

Pattinson especially must realize how special his Batsuit is since he wore George Clooney’s Batman & Robin suit for his audition. That one is vastly different from the heavy, darker Batsuit in The Batman, though that speaks more to the differing tones of the two movies than anything else. It’s safe to say all the hard work that went into constructing Pattinson’s final suit paid off here. It impressed the cast and even would take Pattinson by surprise on set. That’s not even getting into the praise it received from fans, who can finally see it in action this weekend.
