A new piece of fan art imagines what Mark Strong could look like as Mr. Freeze in Matt Reeves’ The Batman 2. Ben Affleck was originally slated to appear as the DC Extended Universe’s Bruce Wayne in The Batman but left the project in 2019 before Robert Pattinson was cast in Warner Bros./DC Films’ reboot. Now, after a plethora of delays, The Batman is proving to be one of the highest-grossing films of the pandemic era.
In addition to Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne/Batman, the film stars Zoë Kravitz’s Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Colin Farrell’s Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin, Jeffrey Wright’s Lieutenant James Gordon, Andy Serkis’ Alfred Pennyworth, John Turturro’s Carmine Falcone, and Paul Dano’s Edward Nashton/Riddler. Inspired by comics like Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli’s Batman: Year One, The Batman follows the Caped Crusader during his second year as a crime fighter as he investigates killings done by a serial killer, Riddler, targeting Gotham’s elites.
Digital artist Mizuri recently posted some art to his Instagram imagining what Mark Strong could look like as Mr. Freeze in a possible sequel to The Batman. Strong is a British actor known for roles such as Dr. Sivana in Shazam!, Merlin in the Kingsman franchise, Lord Blackwood in Sherlock Holmes, and most recently for his starring role in the medical drama Temple as Daniel Milton. In the comics, Dr. Victor Fries is a cryogenic scientist whose main goal is to find a cure for his terminally ill wife. Unfortunately, a lab accident results in Fries’ body being frozen, forcing him to wear a cryo-suit in order to survive. Afterward, his methods to cure his wife’s illness often bring him into conflict with Batman. The last time Mr. Freeze appeared on the big screen was in Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin (1997). While the character’s backstory remained relatively intact, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s performance in the campy film resulted in an eternally quotable, yet bizarre and cartoonish villain. That said, Reeves has expressed interest in exploring a grounded version of Mr. Freeze that would fit into his realistic Batman world.
Near the end of The Batman, Barry Keoghan’s Joker consoles Riddler in Arkham Asylum, teasing a devastating alliance between the two iconic supervillains. Whether this means Joker will be the main villain in The Batman 2 remains to be seen. Given the Clown Prince of Crime’s recent success in live-action, it might be wise to explore other characters like Mr. Freeze. Batman’s rogues’ gallery is a well of untapped, live-action potential, and fans would love to see other villains make the transition to the big screen. That said, two HBO Max spinoffs are in development, focusing on Penguin and Arkham Asylum. Reeves has described the latter as a haunted house movie filled with Batman baddies—which means the iceman may come sooner rather than later.
