The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will not only be telling Snow’s prequel story, but it will finally fulfill the greatest The Hunger Games prequel hope. The latest trailer for The Hunger Games prequel has recently dropped, showing more about a young Coriolanus Snow’s journey as the District 12 mentor for the 10th Hunger Games. Suzanne Collins’ adapted novel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, will reveal more about Snow’s climb to power and just how far he will go for it. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’ story is focused on Snow and his mentee, Lucy Gray Baird, but will heavily feature the events of the 10th Hunger Games.
The Hunger Games movies mentioned a variety of past Hunger Games, especially in Catching Fire when previous victors of the Hunger Games were introduced. Finding out small details of exciting and dangerous Hunger Games, such as Haymitch’s and Finnick’s Games, increased interest in prequel stories surrounding the franchise. Another story many hoped The Hunger Games universe would explore was the reason the Hunger Games were introduced. Katniss’ story was set decades after some of the significant moments in Panem’s history, but what happened to the nation will finally be explored heavily in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, including one key event.
The Ballad Of Songbirds & Snakes Will Finally Show The War Between The Capitol & The Districts
The war between the Capitol and the Districts does not need its own prequel movie, however, because The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will finally delve into it. Part of Snow’s journey in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is trying to escape the poverty that the war has left his family in and regain the old Snow power and status. The new The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes trailer shows various flashbacks that Snow has to when he and Tigris were children and living through the war. These flashbacks will show the action of the Panem war; therefore, it does not need to be covered in a different prequel story.
The 10th Hunger Games is massively underdeveloped compared to the arenas and format seen in The Hunger Games because of the war, and the Capitol is still dealing with the effects of it. Although set 10 years after the war, Snow’s story will still deal very closely with his experience and the trouble the Capitol still has with active rebels. The war may officially be over in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, but the underground rebels and the lack of recovery from the Capitol means the Panem war is a story still being told in Snow’s prequel.
Why The Hunger Games Does Not Need A Prequel Movie About The War
Although a fundamental part of The Hunger Games story, there does not need to be a prequel movie about the war because it would miss the point of the franchise’s message. The interesting part of The Hunger Games and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is how the aftermath of the war is dealt with and what the experience does to the people. The façade of civility and peace that is built by the Capitol after the war is the most horrifying aspect of The Hunger Games as it shows the true barbaric nature of humans.
Flashbacks to the war in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes will be enough to show the atrocities committed in the war without it needing its own story. The Capitol and the Districts fighting is nothing new to The Hunger Games, and Panem did not have the technology at the time of the war as it does in The Hunger Games. Therefore, a movie about the Panem war would not differ greatly from other war movies. It is the decisions made after the war that are unique to The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and The Hunger Games franchise as a whole.
